Consolidated Water Co Ltd was established in 1973 as a private water utility in Grand Cayman. The Company develops and operates seawater desalination plants that utilize reverse osmosis technology and water distribution systems in areas where naturally occurring supplies of potable water are scarce or nonexistent. The Company, through its subsidiaries and affiliates, provides the following services to its customers in the Cayman Islands, The Bahamas, Belize, the British Virgin Islands and Indonesia: Retail Water Operations, Bulk Water Operations, Services Operations and Affiliate Operations. Under Retail Water Operations, the Company produces and supplies water to end-users, including residential, commercial and government customers in the Cayman Islands under an exclusive retail license issued by the Cayman Islands government to provide water in two of the three most populated and rapidly developing areas on Grand Cayman Island. The Company also has a desalination plant in Bali, Indonesia that sells water to resort properties. Under, Bulk Water Operations, the Company produces and supplies water to government-owned distributors in the Cayman Islands, Belize and the Bahamas. Under Service Operations, the Company provides engineering and management services for desalination projects, which include the design and construction of desalination plants and the management and operation of desalination plants owned by other companies. Under Affiliate Operations, the Company produces and supplies bulk water to the British Virgin Islands and Sewage Department. The Company has three business segments: Retail Water Operations, Bulk Water Operations and Services Operations. The Company's Retail Water Operations supply water to end-users, including residential, commercial and government customers. The Bulk Water Operations supply water to government-owned distributors. The Retail and Bulk Operations serve customers in the Cayman Islands, The Bahamas, Belize, the British Virgin Islands and Indonesia. The Company's Services Operations provide engineering and management services, which include the design and construction of desalination plants and the management and operation of desalination plants. All materials, parts and supplies essential to the Company's business operations are obtained from multiple sources. The Company does not manufacture any parts or components for equipment essential to its business. The Company's access to seawater for processing into potable water is granted through its licenses and contracts with governments of the various jurisdictions in which the Company has its operations. The Company competes with GE Water, Veolia, and IDE Technologies, GS Inima, OHL Inima and Biwater. The Company's operations and activities are subject to the governmental regulations and taxes of the countries in which the Company operates.
