The Company currently operates in one operating segment: casual dining restaurants, several of which have on-premise brewing operations that produce BJs signature, proprietary craft beers for its restaurants. It operates in one geographic area; the United States of America. The Company has registered with the United States Patent and Trademark Office its standard and seasonal beer logos and names, as well as many of its signature menu item names including Great White and Sweet Pig for its proprietary pizzas, Together At Last! for its proprietary appetizer, Pizookie for its proprietary dessert and Wow, I Love This Place for its proprietary motto. It competes with casual dining chain restaurants and other food and beverage service operations. It also competes with national and regional restaurant chains and locally-owned restaurants. The Company is subject to various federal, state and local laws, rules and regulations that affect its business. Its restaurants and breweries are subject to tied house laws and the three tier system of liquor distribution, both of which were introduced at the federal level after the repeal of Prohibition.
