How Facebook Is Dominating The Competition

In Friday's broad-based market sell-off, Facebook Inc FB lost nearly 5 percent. Trading at $86.06, the stock is down nearly 13 percent from its all-time high of $99.24.

Yet, from a performance basis, the company is dominating its competition, Statista's Felix Richter argued in a new note.

Richter points to a recent Pew Research Center report, which said that 72 percent of American Internet users are on Facebook. The company enjoys high penetration rates in key demographics, such as individuals aged 18 to 29 years old and in households earning more than $75,000 per year.

And those that use Facebook do so frequently. Nearly 70 percent of U.S. Facebook users log in at least once a day, while 43 percent do so multiple times each day. Just 59 percent of Instagram users and 38 percent of Twitter users log in each day, while the number of users that use those services less often is significantly higher than Facebook.

Statista put together the following chart, which shows the stark contrasts among user preferences.

Facebook, however, may still experience some challenges, which are largely related to its impressive penetration among the world of Internet-using adults. The Pew report also stated that, "Growth on the site has largely plateaued. There has not been a significant change in the overall share of users since 2012."

However, Facebook is attempting to expand the pie with its Internet.org initiative, which claims that two-thirds of the world is still not connected to the Internet. Obviously, growing the base of Internet users would be good for the company: more potential users. And given how its current users enjoy the service, the future for the social-media giant may look bright.
