California-based AtomBeam is revolutionizing the world of data transmission with its groundbreaking compaction technology. By leveraging machine learning and artificial intelligence, AtomBeam creates compact codewords and codebooks that enable seamless communication for machines connected to the Internet of Things (IoT), all while using significantly less computing power.

As AtomBeam secures its intellectual property (IP), the next big challenge is determining the optimal product design. To give the public a glimpse into their decision-making process, AtomBeam hosted a webinar on March 17, outlining the two main options under consideration: field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) and application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs).

ASICs are chips explicitly designed for a particular purpose, offering greater customization and efficiency but lacking the flexibility to be redesigned. On the other hand, FPGAs are reprogrammable chips with configurable logic blocks, providing versatility at the expense of higher costs and lower efficiency.

AtomBeam thoroughly assessed both options and concluded that ASICs would be the ideal solution for the majority of its customers. Given the company's ability to create comprehensive codebooks and considering the types of machines they aim to integrate their IP into, the cost advantage of ASICs makes them the most sensible choice. While AtomBeam used FPGAs for initial evaluation and testing, they acknowledged the costly nature of mistakes with ASICs.

AtomBeam shared that the incremental cost to customers for an FPGA would be around $15 to $20, while an ASIC would only cost pennies. The company's primary goal is to make their product a no-brainer for customers, and choosing ASICs aligns with that objective. With this innovative approach, AtomBeam is poised to transform the data transmission industry and usher in a new era of IoT efficiency.
