Trump Says He Is Unlikely To Attend Primary Debate Owing To Big Lead: 'Ronald Reagan Didn't Do It'

Former President Donald Trump hinted at skipping the initial Republican presidential primary debates, leaving the stage open for his competitors, including Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R-Florida).

What Happened: Trump, who is leading in most Republican-focused polls, expressed uncertainty about his participation in the upcoming debates.

“I haven’t really made up my mind,” Trump said in an interview with Fox News’ Maria Bartiromo on Sunday, as Politico reports.

"Ronald Reagan didn't do it,” he said. “When you have a big lead, you don't do it."

Politico noted that Reagan did participate in GOP debates during the 1980 presidential election, even if he skipped the first one held in Iowa. When Reagan sought reelection in 1984, there were no primary debates due to lack of significant opposition in the Republican Party.
