Instagram Claims 300 Million Users, Surpasses Twitter

Facebook Inc's FB Instagram unit said its total user base hit 300 million and users are posting more than 70 million photos and videos each day and its users are posting more than 70 million photos and videos each day.

With the latest user figure, Instagram surpasses Twitter Inc's TWTR 284 million active users posted for the third quarter ended September 30, although Twitter's base was growing at an annual rate of 23 percent.

Twitter on Wednesday traded near a six-month low at $33.97. Facebook, which acquired Instagram in 2012 for $1 billion, is up roughly 20 percent since June, changing hands recently at $77.35.

Instagram Chief Executive Kevin Systrom, in an undated company blog, said the company is focused on improving user experience by eliminating spam accounts and making it easier to follow favorite members.

Systrom also said the company will soon launch "verified badges" for celebrities, athletes and brands.

"People ask, ‘When it comes to public figures and brands, how do I know they are are really who they say they are?" Systrom said.

Instagram is also focusing on deactivating "fake and spammy accounts" to improve users' experience.

Systrom also noted that Instagram launched a "People tab" that highlights celebrity accounts and also made improvements to its search function.

"Thank you for your passion, creativity and support over these past four years. We can't wait to see what you do next," Systrom concluded.
