New Jersey Assemblywoman Aura Dunn is proposing legislation to make it a criminal offense for parents whose children gain access to their cannabis products.
Lawmaker Takes Action
The move comes as an increasing number of children are accidentally ingesting cannabis edibles due to their resemblance to harmless candies.
Common causes of poisoning include analgesics, cleaning substances, cosmetic and personal care products, sedatives, and antidepressants, reported local media.
Dunn cited a doubling of poison control calls related to child cannabis ingestion from 73 in 2019 to 162 in 2022.
However, data from the National Poison Data Center shows that cannabis accounts for less than 1% of all poison exposures and has not resulted in any documented fatal overdoses.
