'The X-Files' Star David Duchovny Selling $12.5 Million Malibu Home — 3,577 Square Feet And A Train Caboose He Turned Into A Writing Studio

David Duchovny‘s Malibu mansion, recently listed for $12.5 million, is unlike any other nearby.  Not because of the rectangular single-storied layout with solar panels, but because of the old train car the actor spent about a $1 million renovating, turning it into a writing studio, reports The Wall Street Journal.

“It’s one of the things I’m most proud of that I’ve ever developed in my life,” Duchovny told the Journal of the unique structure: a fully functional guest house with a writing area, sleeping area, dining nook, kitchen, bathroom, and roof deck. “It’s just an amazing little spot to be in,” Duchovny says. His reasons for selling, he told the Journal, were that his children are grown, and he owns other real estate in New York and Costa Rica.

Duchovy explained that he initially rented the home from “The X-Files” creator Chris Carter when he lived in New York, eventually moving to the West Coast and choosing to make the new residence his home with his then-wife, actress Téa Leoni, and their two children.

“I wanted to have continuity for my kids,” he told the Journal. “This was the L.A. that they knew, and that’s why I wanted to keep coming back to Malibu.”

Of his disparate creative ventures, the Duchovny told The Guardian in 2021" “If I was observing from the outside, I’d say this is a guy who’s trying to take some kind of shackles off,”  adding, “And I guess the restrictions of being an actor are, you know, you use your instrument in the service of somebody else’s words and visions. Not that I don’t love acting – I do. But there was more that I wanted to express, at least in terms of words, which I guess is the common denominator between the songs and the novels.”
