Maria Bartiromo, the first journalist to report business live from the trading floor of the New York Stock Exchange, is calling it quits with CNBC. Bartiromo, or “Money Honey” as she came to be known, has been with CNBC since 1993. She has reportedly been in talks with CNN, but has selected Fox Business News as her new home.“After 20 years of groundbreaking work at CNBC, Maria Bartiromo will be leaving the company as her contract expires on November 24th," CNBC's Brian Steel said in a statement. "Her contributions to CNBC are too numerous to list but we thank her for all of her hard work over the years and wish her the best.” At the beginning of October,
several news outlets reported that CNBC recently experienced its lowest-rated quarter in 20 years. The network was estimated to have 133,000 total viewers in a day, which represented a 19 percent drop from last year when the network boasted 164,000 total viewers per day. The business news network is under the NBC Universal umbrella, currently owned by Comcast (NASDAQ: CMCSA).Every CNBC segment reported all-time low ratings, with one exception: the 3:00-4:00 p.m. hour of Closing Bell with Maria Bartiromo.Fox Business Network is fairly new to the live business coverage universe, having launched in October 2007. The network only became profitable in June and currently trails CNBC in ratings. Bartiromo is expected to have a show on Fox Business Network, in addition to playing a role with Fox News. Bartiromo has earned two Emmy awards and authored several books. She is married to Jonathon Steinberg, CEO of WisdomTree Investments (NASDAQ: WETF).
