Elon Musk turned a roughly $22 million startup payday into an estimated $1 trillion fortune in less than three decades, and the road between those two numbers included a stretch where he was out of cash. This infographic tracks his approximate net worth year by year, from age 28 to age 55.
The early climb came from two exits. Musk walked away with about $22 million when Compaq bought Zip2 in 1999, then about $180 million when eBay acquired PayPal for $1.5 billion in October 2002. For the next several years his estimated wealth sat between roughly $150 million and $210 million as he funneled that PayPal money into SpaceX, Tesla and SolarCity.
By 2008, at age 37, that bet had nearly wiped him out. Tesla and SpaceX were both burning through money during the financial crisis, and Musk later stated in a court filing that he had run out of cash. On paper he still owned stakes in his companies, but his liquid fortune was essentially gone.
The rebound started with Tesla's June 2010 IPO, which lifted his estimated worth to about $650 million at 39. He crossed $1 billion around age 40 and made his debut among the world's billionaires at about $2 billion in 2012. From there, estimates rose to $2.7 billion at 42, $8.4 billion at 43 and $12 billion at 44, slipped to $10.7 billion at 45, then climbed to $13.9 billion, $19.9 billion and $22.3 billion over the next three years.
The real breakout came in 2020, when a massive run in Tesla shares pushed his fortune to around $170 billion by age 49. It reached roughly $270 billion at 50, dropped to about $140 billion at 51 as Tesla stock slumped during his Twitter takeover, then recovered to around $230 billion at 52 and about $400 billion at 53. He passed $600 billion at 54 as private valuations of SpaceX soared.
SpaceX listed on the Nasdaq on June 12, 2026, briefly making Musk the first person ever worth more than $1 trillion before a steep slide in the shares pulled him back below that mark. A rally in SpaceX and Tesla stock lifted his estimated net worth back to about $1 trillion on Oct. 5, 2026, keeping him far ahead of Jeff Bezos as the richest person in the world. Because nearly all of that wealth is tied up in Tesla and SpaceX stock, his fortune can swing by tens of billions of dollars in a single session, as it did on Oct. 2, 2026, when it jumped about $61 billion.
