Citigroup Inc. (NYSE:C) reported its highest third-quarter revenue in ten years alongside a 17% increase in net income, while CEO Jane Fraser highlighted the bank’s proactive approach to cybersecurity and artificial intelligence (AI).
‘Front Foot’ Cyber Defenses
Addressing the enhanced threat environment facing the financial sector, Fraser outlined the firm’s strategy to protect its systems while modernizing its core technology.
“Our cyber defense strategy is about being on the front foot, moving fast and retaining trust,” Fraser explained. She noted that the bank continuously runs “challenging and disruptive scenarios” to stress test its defenses.
Citigroup subsequently modifies its internal playbooks based on these tests to ensure they are “ready before an event occurs, not after.”
Scaling Artificial Intelligence
In addition to security, Citigroup is deploying AI across its operations to drive top-line benefits and operational efficiencies. The bank’s adoption of AI is accelerating its product development lifecycle, increasing the speed of product launches by 30% to 40%.
Currently, 14,000 Citigroup engineers use an agentic coding tool named Devin. This AI integration has allowed the bank to in-source work and decrease tech vendor spending by 30% year-over-year.
Furthermore, about 100 manual processes are undergoing end-to-end re-engineering utilizing AI and automation. Fraser noted that the financial benefits from these AI deployments “significantly outweigh the investments” the bank has made year-to-date.
Best Third Quarter Revenue
Citigroup posted net income of $5.2 billion and earnings per share of $2.85 for the third quarter of 2026. Total revenues rose 8% year-over-year to $23.8 billion.
“We delivered our best third quarter revenue in a decade, and we saw revenue growth in four out of our five businesses,” Fraser stated. The bank’s Services division led this growth with a 15% revenue increase, while the Markets, Banking, and Wealth divisions also posted positive year-over-year gains.
Overall, Citigroup’s return on tangible common equity (RoTCE) reached 11.5%, an improvement of 180 basis points from the prior year.
