Personal finance expert Dave Ramsey says social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter have allowed people to share opinions about things they don't understand with large audiences.
Responding to critics of his financial ideas on "The Ramsey Show," he said that despite decades of advising others on money and writing multiple books on the subject, people without expertise in financial matters continue to criticize him on social media.
"I love the fact I can jump on Twitter with an idea and 800,000 people see it instantaneously, I love that, it’s kind of cool," Ramsey said. "There’s a lot of fun stuff about Facebook you can do, but I’ll tell you what the other thing it’s done, it’s given voice, it’s given people who shouldn’t have an opinion a place to have one. You’re 29, it’s time to get out of your mother’s basement."

‘Just Stupid'
Ramsey said that these days "everybody" has an opinion, adding that most of his young critics on Twitter and Facebook were not even born when he started his show.
"Notice how many broke people have opinions about money," Ramsey said. "It’s like fat people having opinions about marathons, just stupid, just a dumb idea."
Ramsey said the basic principles he teaches about money and finances have not changed in more than two decades. He believes people can still change their lives by living on less than they earn, getting out of debt and building an emergency fund.

‘You Probably Need Some New Ideas'
Ramsey expressed his frustration with those who are not doing well financially and still argue based on their financial ideas and stick to their old habits and behaviors. He said people only change when they get truly fed up with their situation and decide to stop repeating the same habits that never produced good results.
"If the set of behaviors about handling money, your viewpoints, your big-time philosophies about money have brought you to where you are and you don’t like where you are, you probably need some new ideas darling," Ramsey said. "Quit telling everybody how smart you are about money because the fruit in your life says you’re not, it says you’re stupid."
Ramsey said he does not "pick on" people for their low income but takes issue with their attitudes and behaviors toward money. He reminded listeners that he knows what it feels like to be broke because he once struggled financially himself.
