In a report, Chinese-language business daily Caixin said that silicon carbide wafer&nbsp;manufacturers will be the biggest beneficiary of the increasing competition between China&rsquo;s EV makers.
The report quotes a Chinese investment manager who declined to be named as a result of his position. Caixin is China&#39;s leading business daily and its reporters are closely networked with China government officials.&nbsp;
Caixin reports that high-quality SiC chips produced by international manufacturers vs. lower-quality Chinese wafers are increasingly hard to find, and that there is a pressure on supply.
&ldquo;Everybody is fighting for SiC wafers,&rdquo; the investment manager told Caixin. &ldquo;It is hard to lay hands on wafers produced by first-tier major international suppliers, such as Wolfspeed, Inc. (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/wolf#NYSE">WOLF</a>),&rdquo; the manager said.
The world&rsquo;s largest SiC wafer manufacturers comprise STMicroelectronics N.V. (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/stm#NYSE">STM</a>), Infineon Technologies AG (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ifnny#OTC">IFNNY</a>), Wolfspeed, Rohm Co. Ltd. (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/rohcy#OTC">ROHCY</a>), ON Semiconductor Corp. and Allegro Microsystems, Inc. (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/algm#NASDAQ">ALGM</a>). The source said that these companies in particular would be seeing increasing demand over the near-term.
&ldquo;It is expected that the demand for SiC wafers will still exceed the supply in the next one to two years,&rdquo; the source said. &nbsp;
&ldquo;Although it is possible to buy wafers produced by second-tier suppliers, such as SICC Co. Ltd. and TanKeBlue Semiconductor Co. Ltd., it will take a long time for them to deliver the orders as much of their production capacity is taken by orders from major suppliers, like Infineon Technologies AG. (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ifnny#OTC">IFNNY</a>).&rdquo;
Automakers such as Li Auto Inc. (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/li#NASDAQ">LI</a>), XPeng Inc. (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/xpev#NYSE">XPEV</a>), Nio Inc. (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/nio#NYSE">NIO</a>) and Geely Automobile Holdings Limited (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/gelyf#OTC">GELYF</a>) have recently adopted SiC waifers, which create much faster charging capabilities for energy efficient vehicles.
Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/tsla#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) was the first automaker to introduce SiC wafers, although the company has since said it has figured out ways to cut back on its usage of Silicon Carbide chips as part of its cost-reduction strategy to make its cars more profitable.
Traditional car makers turning to the EV market such as Mercedes-Benz Group AG (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/mbgaf#OTC">MBGAF</a>), BMW (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/bmwyy#OTC">BMWYY</a>), Volkswagen AG (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/vwapy#OTC">VWAPY</a>) and Toyota Motor Corp. (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/tm#NYSE">TM</a>) in particular are ordering increasing numbers of SiC wafers to fuel them as unlike Tesla, they have not figured out ways to cut back on their usage, according to China VCs.
All this demand in an increasingly-crowded EV space is putting upward pressure on prices of SiC waifers as suppliers can&rsquo;t keep up with the demand from automakers, the Caixin report said. If Li Auto alone wanted to use SiC chips in all its June delivery vehicles, it would need 5,000 six-inch SiC waifers which is more than any production line in China can supply in a month, Lu Xiaobao, managing director of China VC CAS Star told Caixin.

Stocks That Hit 52-Week Highs On Tuesday

The hopes of the U.S. and China clinching a trade deal are soaring as a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.financialexpress.com/economy/us-china-trade-talks-shift-from-beijing-to-washington-as-donald-trump-xi-jinpings-march-1-deadline-looms/1492122/">March 1 </a> deadline draws close.
As analysts deliberate several permutations and combinations that are likely to be packaged into the deal, a CNBC report suggested China may opt to increase its semiconductor imports from the U.S. to $200 billion over the next six years.
<h3>The Analyst</h3>
Discussing the likely impact of such a development, Rosenblatt Securities analyst Jun Zhang said he has Buy ratings on QUALCOMM, Inc. (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/qcom#NASDAQ">QCOM</a>), Lumentum Holdings Inc (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/lite#NASDAQ">LITE</a>), NeoPhotonics Corp (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/nptn#NYSE">NPTN</a>) and Texas Instruments Incorporated (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/txn#NASDAQ">TXN</a>). Zhang has a Neutral rating on Inphi Corporation (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/iphi#NYSE">IPHI</a>).
<h3>The Environment Today</h3>
China&#39;s semiconductor imports from the U.S. have totaled roughly $10 billion annually in recent years, Zhang said in a Tuesday note. With most U.S. suppliers packaging their products in Taiwan, the nation has earned the distinction of being the largest semiconductor exporter to China, he said.&nbsp;
The analyst estimates that U.S. component suppliers have a 50-percent share in&nbsp;the $200 billion to $300 billion in products China exports every year.
<h3>A New Scenario</h3>
If China requires <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-ratings/analyst-color/19/01/12952545/goldman-sachs-shares-semiconductor-stock-picks-for-a-ch"> U.S. semiconductor companies </a> to move packaging to China, Zhang estimates that American&nbsp;exports to China would grow by five to six times. Under such a scenario, U.S. component suppliers would account for about $100 billion of U.S. exports to China every year, he said.&nbsp;
Any impact on the Taiwanese supply chain from a potential Chinese move to increase orders from U.S. component suppliers in 2019 &mdash; and move packaging from Taiwan to China &mdash; would be more short-term than mid-term, the analyst said.&nbsp;
Zhang expects the anticipated change to positively impact Chinese telecom vendors such as Huawei and high-tech companies, as he said they&#39;re the biggest buyers of semiconductors from U.S. suppliers.
<h3>Rosenblatt Names Potential Beneficiaries</h3>
<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-ratings/analyst-color/19/02/13073689/sell-side-stays-on-sidelines-with-qualcomm-awaits-reso">Qualcomm </a> is expected to benefit at the expense of MediaTek, as the latter still lacks a 5G smartphone chipset.

Despite the near-term challenges of high inflation and declining consumer demand, industry experts hold an optimistic long-term outlook for the semiconductor sector due to its growing applications across various fields.
In this piece, I have discussed the reasons why I think Cohu, Inc. (<a href="https://stocknews.com/stock/COHU/">COHU</a>), ROHM Co., Ltd. (<a href="https://stocknews.com/stock/ROHCY/">ROHCY</a>), and ChipMOS TECHNOLOGIES INC. (<a href="https://stocknews.com/stock/IMOS/">IMOS</a>) are performing better than Intel Corporation (<a href="https://stocknews.com/stock/INTC/">INTC</a>) and could be wise investments now.
According to Gartner, global semiconductor revenues will decline <a href="https://www.gartner.com/en/newsroom/press-releases/2023-04-26-gartner-forecasts-worldwide-semiconductor-revenue-to-decline-11-percent-in-2023#:~:text=Semiconductor%20Revenue%20Totaled%20%24599.6%20Billion,growth%20of%200.2%25%20from%202021.">11.2% in 2023</a>. INTC reported better-than-expected earnings and revenue in the second quarter. The company returned to profitability after two consecutive quarters of losses. For the third quarter, it guided for EPS of 20 cents per share and revenue of $13.40 billion at the midpoint. INTC's third-quarter earnings and revenue forecast were higher than the Street estimates of 16 cents per share and $13.23 billion, respectively.
INTC CEO Pat Gelsinger said that the company continues to witness "persistent weakness" in all segments of its business through year-end, and its server chip sales will not recover until the fourth quarter. He also highlighted that cloud companies were securing graphic processing units (GPUs) for artificial intelligence (AI) instead of its central processors.
Due to demand softness in the consumer electronics market, demand for chips will remain subdued, putting pressure on INTC this year. Although the company has also been a slow-mover in the AI chip segment, but its Gaudi2 GPU is taking rapid strides in the lucrative AI processing market.
