Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA) and Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (NASDAQ:SPCX) CEO Elon Musk took a swipe at detached corporate leadership, arguing that successful leaders must work alongside their employees.
Musk Reveals Hands-On Role at xAI’s Memphis Data Center
On Friday, Musk shared a clip from his conversation with billionaire investor Ron Baron at the 33rd Annual Baron Investment Conference on X.
“Armies that win have the general at the front lines. Nobody wants to bleed for the prince in the palace,” Musk wrote.
During the interview, Baron asked Musk how many CEOs live in an Airstream trailer on-site while working directly alongside employees.
Musk confirmed that his trailer is parked beside a power plant at xAI’s massive data center in Memphis, Tennessee.
He said the company built a facility capable of generating more than 1 gigawatt of electricity in approximately a year, compared with the roughly five years such projects typically require.
“There is no upstairs,” Musk said, describing his leadership approach.
He revealed that he walks the entire site up to five times daily and has personally helped pull massive power cables, run fiber-optic lines, wire switches and work on power plant software.
“I try to do at least a little bit of everything, so that I’m not numb to the pain of the people who are actually doing it,” he said.
Musk added that he prefers approaching workers directly and asking questions rather than remaining in an office and waiting for employees to bring problems to him.
Musk Calls His Airstream Trailer a ‘Palace’
In September, Musk revealed that he lives in an Airstream trailer in Memphis while overseeing xAI’s expanding Colossus computing operation.
At the All-In Summit in September, he jokingly called the trailer his “palace.”
At the time, SpaceX President and COO Gwynne Shotwell also confirmed his unusual living arrangement, saying Musk sleeps on the factory floor and was in Memphis helping build facilities.
Musk has previously described sleeping at Tesla facilities during demanding production periods and staying at Twitter’s headquarters after acquiring the social media company.
