Sea Stock Tumbles: What's Going On?

Sea Ltd (NYSE:SE) shares are moving lower Tuesday. The company introduced Sea Cloud, an AI-focused enterprise platform that marks its entry into a new business segment. Here’s what you should know.

Sea Turns Proprietary Cloud Infrastructure Into Commercial Offering

The company revealed the initiative in an employee anniversary letter filed with the SEC through Form 6-K, celebrating nine years since its New York Stock Exchange listing. Sea said it has spent more than a decade developing and operating its own cloud infrastructure, which currently powers Garena, Shopee and Monee 24 hours a day.

Over the last two years, about 500 employees have reengineered the platform to handle AI workloads. According to Sea, the upgrades have significantly reduced the time required to take AI projects from development to production. The company now intends to offer the service to external customers under the Sea Cloud name.

Management likened the move to Shopee’s early decision to focus on mobile commerce while competitors remained centered on desktop platforms. Sea believes its long experience running infrastructure for large-scale consumer businesses gives it an advantage that rivals cannot easily replicate.

Monee May be Headed Toward its Own IPO

The letter also pointed to the possibility of a major corporate restructuring. Sea said Monee is approaching a stage where it could function as a standalone business, and suggested that a public listing could provide additional capital and greater flexibility for future growth. The company added that it could potentially ring the NYSE opening bell once again.

Sea also highlighted the expansion of its businesses since going public. Garena’s quarterly active user base increased from 69 million to 666 million, Shopee’s quarterly gross merchandise value grew from $1.1 billion to $38.3 billion, and quarterly revenue climbed from $94 million to $7.8 billion.

Investors may be evaluating the potential consequences of those developments. Spinning off Monee would place Sea’s fastest-growing business on the public market independently, which could reduce the portion of that growth retained by Sea shareholders. At the same time, Sea Cloud pushes the company into the competitive enterprise technology sector, where success will depend on substantial investment and strong execution.

Insider Sales Might be Weighing On the Stock

Recent insider transactions could be adding to the pressure. A Form 4 filing shows that Chief Corporate Officer and General Counsel Yanjun Wang sold 2,000 Class A shares through a BVI entity on Oct. 13 and Oct. 14 at prices ranging from roughly $94.50 to $97.71 per share.

The transactions generated approximately $192,000 in proceeds and were carried out under a Rule 10b5-1 trading plan that was adopted on March 26.

SE Shares Are Sliding

SE Price Action: Sea shares were down 8.33% at $81.10 at the time of publication on Tuesday. The stock is near its 52-week low of $77.05, according to Benzinga Pro.
