Qualcomm Incorporated (NASDAQ:QCOM) could help smartphone makers expand their premium device portfolios and unlock new artificial intelligence opportunities through its dual-flagship chip strategy, according to a Counterpoint Research analysis published Wednesday.
The research firm said Qualcomm’s decision to introduce two flagship processors reflects the growing premium smartphone market and rising demand for AI-powered applications, gaming and content creation.
Qualcomm unveiled the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 at its Snapdragon Summit 2026 in Maui.
The standard version targets a broader range of premium smartphones, while the Extreme model focuses on more demanding applications.
Counterpoint said the strategy gives smartphone manufacturers greater flexibility to differentiate devices based on performance, design and consumer needs.
AI and Gaming Drive Demand for Sustained Performance
Counterpoint highlighted Qualcomm’s growing focus on sustained performance rather than short bursts of processing power.
The research firm said increasingly complex applications, including AI assistants, gaming and content creation, require processors to maintain strong performance over longer periods.
Qualcomm’s emphasis on thermal efficiency and sustained processing power could improve everyday smartphone experiences as consumer usage patterns evolve.
The company’s new Adreno Matrix cores also bring AI capabilities directly into the graphics pipeline. The technology supports advanced rendering, higher-resolution graphics and frame generation while reducing latency and power consumption.
Qualcomm has also introduced an offset package-on-package design that moves memory away from the processor to improve cooling and maintain higher performance for longer.
Smartphone Cameras Could Become Critical to AI Adoption
Counterpoint said smartphone cameras are evolving beyond photography into important sensors that help AI systems understand their surroundings.
These capabilities could support more personalized AI assistants that respond to real-world information and user needs.
However, the research firm cautioned that wider adoption will depend on how effectively smartphone manufacturers demonstrate the technology while addressing concerns over privacy, battery consumption and personal data collected through sensors.
Qualcomm Sees Smartphones As the Center of the AI Ecosystem
Counterpoint also highlighted Qualcomm’s ambition to position smartphones as the central hub for AI experiences across connected devices.
The strategy would allow smartphones to coordinate AI functions across personal computers, wearables and extended reality devices.
With smartphones already widely adopted worldwide, Counterpoint said they are well-positioned to become the foundation of connected AI ecosystems.
The research firm added that this approach could create new opportunities for device manufacturers to expand their product offerings and compete through connected experiences rather than relying solely on hardware performance.
QCOM Price Action: Qualcomm shares were down 0.44% at $176.08 during premarket trading on Wednesday, according to Benzinga Pro data.
