Amazon CEO Andy Jassy Identifies The Most Crucial Skill For Success: 'Embarrassing Amount' Depends On This

Amazon.com Inc AMZN CEO Andy Jassy shared his insights on the most crucial factor for success.

What Happened: Jassy, who took over from Jeff Bezos in 2021, believes that a positive attitude is the key to success, reported CNBC on Thursday. He emphasized the importance of a positive mindset, especially in one’s 20s, as it significantly impacts success.

“I think an embarrassing amount of how well you do, particularly in your 20s, has to do with attitude,” Jassy, 56, said.

He clarified that a positive attitude is not just about being cheerful but also about working well in a team and meeting deadlines. Jassy highlighted that these simple strategies are often overlooked but can make a big difference.

He also noted that having a positive attitude can help individuals take advantage of opportunities like stretch assignments and training programs, as it boosts confidence and the ability to tackle challenges.

Jassy, who joined Amazon at 29 as a marketing manager, was advised against becoming Bezos’s first “shadow” advisor. However, he chose to focus on the positive aspects of the job, which helped him strengthen his leadership skills.

Despite criticism of Amazon’s leadership for its treatment of warehouse employees during the COVID-19 pandemic and fostering a harsh workplace culture, Jassy has acknowledged that the company could improve its employee treatment.

Why It Matters: This insight from Jassy comes at a time when he is under scrutiny for his anti-union remarks. An NLRB judge recently ruled that Jassy’s comments about unionization efforts at Amazon violated federal labor law.

Despite this, Jassy’s advice on maintaining a positive attitude at work aligns with other successful business leaders’ philosophies. For instance, Jeff Bezos has shared his unconventional approach to productivity, which involves allowing his mind to wander during meetings to foster creativity and problem-solving.

Additionally, insights from other influential leaders like Bill Gates and Mark Cuban further underscore the importance of attitude and mindset in achieving success. Gates recently shared Steve Jobs‘ secret to captivating presentations, emphasizing the role of storytelling. Meanwhile, Cuban, in an ask-me-anything session on X, highlighted the importance of curiosity and continuous learning in both business and life.
