Gold And Silver Prices Edge Higher Today, Ahead Of US Inflation Data

Extending a stellar run for silver and the related exchange-traded funds, the iShares Silver Trust (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/slv#NYSE">SLV</a>) surged nearly 18% last week.
What Happened: That only scratches the surface of <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/long-ideas/20/07/16725271/2-precious-metals-etfs-making-important-headlines">last week&#39;s silver ebullience</a>. Investors poured $764.23 million into SLV, the largest silver-backed ETF, and the metals two-day price move on July 21 and July was 15.66% &ndash; its <a href="https://twitter.com/CarterBWorth/status/1286062624896102403/photo/1">fourth-best two-day move</a> on record.
Not one to shy away from volatility, big moves in silver open the door to opportunities with the ProShares Ultra Silver (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/agq#NYSE">AGQ</a>) and the ProShares UltraShort Silver (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/zsl#NYSE">ZSL</a>).
AGQ attempts to <a href="https://www.proshares.com/funds/agq.html">deliver double the daily returns </a>of the Bloomberg Silver Subindex while the bearish ZSL looks to deliver double the daily inverse returns of that index.
Why It&#39;s Important:&nbsp;Like all leveraged ETFs, AGQ and ZSL are short-term instruments and they don&#39;t always do what they&#39;re supposed to do. For example, the bullish AGQ jumped 34.26% last week, which is close to but not exactly double the price performance of the white metal. However, the bearish ZSL lost less than 29% last week.
If history is any guide, both AGQ and ZSL are worth considering over the near-term. Following the aforementioned epic two-day pop by silver last week, Cornerstone Macro Chief Market Technician <a href="https://twitter.com/CarterBWorth">Carter Worth took to Twitter</a> with some background on big two-day moves in silver.
Excluding last week&#39;s move, the top 15 two-day moves in silver resulted in just four instances of the metal trading higher a week later and just five of silver residing higher a month later, according to Worth&#39;s data.
The median loss a week later was 1%, expanding to 2.27% a month out, potentially boosting the near-term case for ZSL.
What&#39;s Next: History isn&#39;t guaranteed to repeat, which is to say traders shouldn&#39;t get too heavy in ZSL nor should they ignore the bullish AGQ.
Some traders are bullish on silver&#39;s near-term prospects, with some forecasting gains <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2020/07/24/silver-prices-trader-foresees-30percent-rally.html">of up to 30%</a>, fueled by accommodative monetary policy by the Federal Reserve and other central banks. Soaring demand for renewable energy products, a major end market for silver, bolsters the industrial case for the metal.
&ldquo;Solar tracker shipments reached new record levels in 2019 with shipments exceeding 31GW globally, an increase of 55 percent year-on-year,&rdquo; <a href="https://ihsmarkit.com/research-analysis/the-twin-pillars-of-future-growth-of-the-solar-tracker-market.html" target="_blank">according to IHS Markit.</a>
&ldquo;Exceptional demand in the United States, as well as multiple 1 GW plus markets in Brazil, Mexico, Chile, Spain, and Australia, helped propel shipments to new heights. Furthermore, for many suppliers active in the United States the stepdown in the investment tax credit (ITC) and the willingness of developers to safe harbor for projects yet to be built has meant that 2020 started very strongly for numerous suppliers.&rdquo;

Though it is still in the doldrums relative to other currency exchange-traded funds, the PowerShares DB US Dollar Index Bullish Fund 
 (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/uup#NYSE">UUP</a>) has perked up in recent sessions. The dollar&#39;s awakening, albeit modest, is pressuring commodities and the related ETFs, including silver funds.
The iShares Silver Trust (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/slv#NYSE">SLV</a>) and the ETFS Silver Trust (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/sivr#NYSE">SIVR</a>), both of which are backed by physical holdings of silver, each slid 2.4 percent Tuesday. UUP gained almost half a percent as investors turned to safer assets.
&ldquo;Volatility in the entire Precious Metals space has been the case for the past several sessions and today&rsquo;s gap higher in the U.S. Dollar threatens to take metals prices even lower should this strength hold,&rdquo; said <a href="http://streetonefinancial.com/">Street One Financial</a> Vice President Paul Weisbruch in a note out Tuesday.&nbsp;
<h3>Quick Reversal</h3>
Silver&#39;s retreat on Tuesday comes just a few days after the white metal was bid higher amid U.S. geopolitical tensions with North Korea. SLV and SIVR are now up about 4.2 percent year to date, less than half the gains posted by the equivalent gold ETFs.
Faltering silver prices could create opportunity in leveraged ETFs, such as the ProShares UltraShort Silver (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/zsl#NYSE">ZSL</a>) and the VelocityShares 3X Inverse Silver ETN (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/dslv#NYSE">DSLV</a>).
&ldquo;The recent volatility in these segments, especially in Silver prices themselves should attract more traders to the space not only of SLV which is by far the largest fund in the space at $5.7 billion in AUM, but in other offerings as well,&rdquo; said Weisbruch. &ldquo;Smaller funds that are currently on our radar that often have appeal to traders and portfolio managers looking to aggressively hedge portfolios or make short term directional moves include DSLV and ZSL.&rdquo;
<h3>Miners, Too</h3>
If silver prices remain stuck in a rut, investors should consider the consequences for mining ETFs. For example, the Global X Silver Miners ETF (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/sil#NYSE">SIL</a>) lost more than 2 percent Tuesday and is clinging to a year-to-date gain of a comparable amount.
Prolonged weakness in silver miners could spell momentum for the Direxion Daily Silver Miners Index 2X Bear Shares (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/dull#NYSE">DULL</a>). DULL, which turns 1 year old next month, looks to deliver double the daily inverse performance of the Solactive Global Silver Miners Index.

With year-to-date losses of just under 30 percent, the ETFS Physical Platinum Shares (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/pplt#NYSE">PPLT</a>) and the ETFS Physical Palladium Shares (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/pall#NYSE">PALL</a>) are easily the worst performers among the major precious metals exchange-traded funds.
The SPDR Gold Trust (ETF) (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/gld#NYSE">GLD</a>) is down just 10.6 percent, while the iShares Silver Trust (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/slv#NYSE">SLV</a>) looks good compared to PALL and PPLT with a year-to-date loss of 12.6 percent. Shrewd commodities and ETF investors know better than to be fooled by silver.

Flows data have proven to be accurate harbingers of silver&#39;s recent fate, and traders are getting it right with inverse, leveraged silver ETFs&mdash; something that is not always the case with<a href="http://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/long-ideas/15/11/5969460/rate-hike-odds-shine-a-light-on-leveraged-gold-miners-etfs"> leveraged gold miners ETFs</a>.
 SLV and rival Silver Trust (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/sivr#NYSE">SIVR</a>) have been losing assets as investors, concerned about the effects of higher interest rates on commodities, have continued departing precious metals ETFs.
<h3>The Commodities Concern</h3>
&ldquo;Since topping out in August 2011, commodity ETP assets have been in decline thanks to negative returns and sharp redemptions. Investors have yanked more than $22 billion out of commodity ETPs over this period,&rdquo; according to <a href="http://news.morningstar.com/articlenet/article.aspx?id=716810">Morningstar</a>.
However, what long-term investors should concern themselves with is long-term, risk-adjusted returns &ndash; and that outlook is bleak for commodities because, as Morningstar&#39;s data indicate, portfolios including commodities result in lower Sharpe Ratios than traditional 60 percent equity/40 percent fixed income portfolios.
Translation: These are the days for risk-tolerant traders to consider inverse silver exchange-traded products, including the ProShares UltraShort Silver (ETF) (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/zsl#NYSE">ZSL</a>) and the Credit Suisse AG - VelocityShares 3x Inverse Silver ETN (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/dslv#NYSE">DSLV</a>).
<h3>Inverse Silver</h3>
&ldquo;This morning we see SLV barely trading above another 2015 low registered just yesterday in the product, and 2015 in general has been brutal for the metal and related precious metals, since none of them trade in a vacuum. Even though it has performed well this year being on the bearish side of Silver prices, ZSL only has $55 million in assets under management and has seen modest outflows (-$12 million) year-to-date in spite of its timeliness,&rdquo; said <a href="http://streetonefinancial.com/">Street One Financial</a> Paul Weisbruch in a note out Tuesday. 
DSLV attempts to deliver triple the daily inverse returns of the S&amp;P GSCI Silver Index Excess Return while ZSL, the ProShares product, seeks to deliver double the daily inverse returns of silver prices at the London fixing.
 ZSL is up nearly 13 percent over the past three months while DSLV is higher by 16.7 percent over that period.

Twenty exchange-traded funds hit 52-week lows Wednesday, and in a telling sign about the impact expectation of higher interest rates on some asset classes, six of those offending funds were commodities products.
Perhaps surprisingly, no dedicated silver ETFs joined the 52-week low club Wednesday, though that dubious distinction might not be far off. The iShares Silver Trust (ETF) (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/slv#NYSE">SLV</a>), the world&#39;s largest ETF backed by physical holdings of silver, and the Silver Trust (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/sivr#NYSE">SIVR</a>) are each down 10 percent over the past month.

 The not so fun fact being thrown around about SLV is that Wednesday represented the ETF&#39;s 10th consecutive losing session.
As <a href="http://blogs.barrons.com/focusonfunds/2015/11/11/silver-etf-careens-toward-longest-ever-losing-streak/">Barron&#39;s</a> notes, that is the longest losing streak in SLV&#39;s history. The $4.5 billion ETF debuted in April 2006.
<h3>Silver And Gold And The Federal Reserve</h3>
As Benzinga <a href="http://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/long-ideas/15/11/5970440/digging-deep-with-leveraged-gold-miner-etfs-as-higher-rates-l">reported earlier this week</a> regarding gold (and the same holds true for silver), if higher rates come to pass, Treasury yields will begin reflecting that before the Fed makes it official.
 Along the way, the U.S. dollar will likely rise and commodities, including gold, are denominated in dollars. That means a stronger dollar, as has already been proven, is not a good thing for<a href="http://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/long-ideas/15/10/5914729/the-strong-dollar-catalyst-no-one-is-talking-about"> bullion-backed and gold mining ETFs</a>.
<h3>Silver's Silver Lining</h3>
No pun intended, but there is a silver lining. That being, flows data have proven to be accurate harbingers of silver&#39;s recent fate and traders are getting it right with inverse, leveraged silver ETFs, something that is not always the case with<a href="http://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/long-ideas/15/11/5969460/rate-hike-odds-shine-a-light-on-leveraged-gold-miners-etfs"> leveraged gold miners ETFs</a>.
Since the start of the current quarter, SLV and SIVR have bled $71.4 million and $3.1 million, respectively, in assets. Conversely, traders have warmed to bearish leveraged equivalents, including the ProShares UltraShort Silver (ETF) (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/zsl#NYSE">ZSL</a>). 
That faith has been rewarded. ZSL, which undergoes a 2-for-1 split today, attempts to deliver double the daily inverse performance of silver prices at the London fix. While SLV is on a 10-day losing streak, ZSL has surged nearly 25 percent over the same period. During the fourth quarter, the double-leveraged silver bear fund has added nearly $20.4 million in new assets.
For the trader thirsting for some more juice, ZSL has a triple-leveraged rival in the form of the Credit Suisse AG - VelocityShares 3x Inverse Silver ETN (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/dslv#NASDAQ">DSLV</a>). The VelocityShares 3x Inverse Silver ETN attempts to deliver triple the daily inverse performance of the S&amp;P GSCI&reg; Silver Index Excess Return.
DSLV has returned a tidy 38.9 percent over the past 10 trading sessions and has raked in nearly $12.6 million in new assets this quarter.

Traders Nail The Silver ETF Trade

Precious metals started the year as one of the most hated asset classes after a 2013 that wreaked havoc on gold, silver, and even platinum prices.

	Unfortunately, after a brief rally attempt in the first quarter, <a href="http://www.benzinga.com/topic/silver">silver</a> is once again slipping back down near its 2013 lows and appears to be nearing key support levels.

	The iShares Silver Trust (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/slv#NYSE">SLV</a>) tracks the daily spot price of silver bullion. This ETF is structured as a trust that owns physical silver and in turn creates or redeems shares according to fluctuations in the value of this precious metal.

	SLV is the oldest and largest <a href="http://www.benzinga.com/topic/etfs">ETF</a> that tracks silver prices, with more than $6.3 billion in total assets under management. That equates to approximately 327 million ounces of silver as of recent price data.

	Over the last 10 weeks, SLV has declined 13.50 percent from its recent high and is now down 2 percent on the year. While that return may seem merely weak on the surface, this represents a further extension of the 36 percent drop that SLV experienced in 2013.

	Right now the price action appears to be firmly back in favor of the bears as falling interest rates and tepid inflation statistics are not supporting higher silver prices.

	The key test will be whether or not this ETF can hold above its prior 2013 low near $18 per share and consolidate for another rally attempt. A drop below these key levels will likely be the signal for another wave of selling from commodities trading desks.

	Aggressive ETF investors that are looking to capitalize on further price deterioration in this sector may want to consider the ProShares UltraShort Silver ETF (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/zsl#NYSE">ZSL</a>).

	This fund is designed to track double the inverse daily price movement of silver bullion. As an example, if silver bullion were to decline 1 percent, ZSL would rise 2 percent.

	Conversely, one way to play the next bullish cycle in silver is through mining stocks. The Global X Silver Miners ETF (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/sil#NYSE">SIL</a>) tracks the price movement of 26 global companies engaged in the exploration, mining, and refinement within the silver industry.

	SIL tends to move in a similar fashion as SLV, but can have even more pronounced price swings depending on investor sentiment.

	Whether you are a long-term investor or short-term trader, there are numerous ways to play silver using exchange-traded funds to profit in both directions.

ETFs to Watch August 7, 2013 (FXP, GDX, ZSL)

Friday is the last day of the second quarter so now is the ideal time to have a look at the themes and ETFs that worked well for investors over the past three months.

	According to simple screen that we <a href="http://www.finviz.com/screener.ashx?v=141&amp;f=ind_exchangetradedfund,ta_perf_13w10o&amp;ft=3&amp;o=-perf13w">ran on Finviz</a>, fewer than 50 ETFs and ETNs are showing second-quarter gains of 10 percent or more.

	The Direxion Daily Gold Miners Bear 3X Shares (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/dust#NYSE">DUST</a>) is on pace for a second-quarter triple, making it the best-performing ETF for the quarter. DUST's stellar second-quarter performance is nothing new. Even with a more than eight percent loss Thursday, this triple-leveraged bearish play on gold miners is up almost 450 percent in the past six months.

	DUST also serves as a good segue to exploring some of the similarities among the second quarters ETF studs. Of the 20 top ETFs and ETNs after DUST in terms of second-quarter returns, five are bearish plays on precious metals, including the three best after DUST. Those three are the ProShares UltraShort Silver (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/zsl#NYSE">ZSL</a>), the ProShares UltraShort Gold (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/gll#NYSE">GLL</a>) and the PowerShares DB Gold Double Short ETN (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/dzz#NYSE">DZZ</a>).

	Prior to Thursday, the average quarterly gain for those three products was nearly 79 percent. Of course, it must be repeated that there are significant risks involved with leveraged ETFs, <a href="http://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/long-ideas/13/03/3429669/these-leveraged-etfs-could-be-worth-the-risk">particularly over long holding periods</a>. They taketh as quickly as they giveth.

	Finding non-leveraged star performers among the "Non-DUST 20" is not hard, but the group is small in number. However, investors may already be familiar with some of these ETFs as <a href="http://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/long-ideas/13/06/3686609/interesting-similarities-among-2013s-top-performing-etfs">they are among 2013's best non-leveraged performers</a>.

	The four best non-leveraged ETFs in the current quarter are, in order starting with best returns, the Guggenheim Solar ETF (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/tan#NYSE">TAN</a>), the Market Vectors Solar Energy ETF (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/kwt#NYSE">KWT</a>), the First Trust NASDAQ Clean Edge Green Energy Index Fund (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/qcln#NASDAQ">QCLN</a>) and the PowerShares WilderHill Clean Energy (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/pbw#NYSE">PBW</a>).

	The common theme beyond alternative energy is that as of June 18, three of those four ETFs held at least one Elon Musk stock, Solar City (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/scty#NASDAQ">SCTY</a>) or Tesla (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/tsla#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>). KWT was the exception.

	Four of the remaining top performers are linked by the same theme as well. That being <a>rising yields on U.S. Treasurys</a>. Specifically, these are ETFs that are designed to go up when Treasury yields do the same. That quartet includes the ProShares UltraPro Short 20+ Year Treasury (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/ttt#NYSE">TTT</a>) and the Direxion Daily 20+ Yr Treasury Bear 3X Shares (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/tmv#NYSE">TMV</a>), which are up an average of 22 percent this quarter.

	No surprises among some of the other non-DUST 20. Six are <a href="http://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/long-ideas/13/06/3694555/four-more-facts-about-em-etfs-you-need-to-know-now">bearish plays on emerging markets</a>, including three of the top seven. Inverse plays on three of the four BRIC nations are included in that group of six. India is the exception because there is no longer an inverse ETF for that country. The best bearish emerging markets ETF in the second quarter has been the double-leveraged ProShares UltraShort MSCI Brazil (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/bzq#NYSE">BZQ</a>). Forget its quarterly performance, though. Even with a 3.5 percent drop on Thursday, BZQ is still up 41.5 percent in just the past month.

Common Themes Among Q2's Best ETFs

There was no hiding out on Wall Street on Thursday as stocks, bonds, and commodities were all crushed on expectations that the Federal Reserve will begin winding down its stimulus program later this year. 

Reports suggest that the central bank will taper its bond purchases to $65 billion at the September FOMC Meeting and that the quantitative easing program will completely end by mid-2014. 

Investor anxiety about slowing liquidity from the Fed could be seen across asset classes on Thursday as stocks, Treasuries, precious metals and energy prices all fell sharply. The Dow ended the day down almost 354 points. 

Major Averages

The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 354 points, or 2.34 percent, to close at 14,758. 

The S&amp;P 500 fell 41 points, or 2.50 percent, to 1,588. 

The Nasdaq shed almost 79 points, or 2.28 percent, to 3,365. 

Jobless Claims

Initial unemployment cliams rose to 354,000 for the week ending June 15 from 336,000 for the week ending June 8. This compared to consensus estimates calling for an increase to 340,000. 

Continuing claims fell to 2.951 million for the week ending June 8 from 2.991 million for the week ending June 1. This compared to consensus expectations for a decline to 2.967 million. 

Existing Home Sales

Existing home sales rose from 4.97 million in April to 5.18 million in May. This compared to consensus estimates calling for an increase to 5 million. 

Philadelphia Fed

Manufacturing activity rose in the Philadelphia region in May. The Philadelphia Fed's Business Outlook Survey increased to 12.5 last month from -5.2 in May. This was the highest reported reading since April 2011 and came in well ahead of consensus expectations for an increase to -0.2. 

Leading Indicators

The Conference Board's Index of Leading Indicators rose 0.1 percent in May from an upwardly revised 0.8 percent in April. The consensus expected that the index would increase by 0.2 percent. 

Commodities

Crude oil plunged along with other risk assets on Thursday. Late in the day, NYMEX crude futures were trading down almost 3 percent to $95.40. Brent crude contracts had lost nearly 4 percent and were trading at $101.96. Natural gas fell roughly 2 percent to $3.88. 

Precious metals plunged on indications that the Federal Reserve will begin tapering its bond purchases at its next meeting. Near the close, COMEX gold futures had fallen more than 7 percent to $1,276.80 while silver was down more than 9 percent to $19.60. Copper lost 3.16 percent on the session to $3.0520. 

In the grains complex, both corn and wheat were lower on Thursday. At last check, corn had fallen 1.75 percent while wheat was down 0.91 percent. Movers in soft commodities included coffee and sugar. Coffee contracts fell nearly 5 percent on the day while sugar was down 3.64 percent. 

Bonds

There were very few places to hide out on Thursday as bonds plunged along with stocks. Near the close of equities, the iShares Barclays 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/tlt#NYSE">TLT</a>) was down 1.52 percent to $110.43. Yields jumped on the day amid the sell-off in bonds. 

At last check, the 2-Year Note was yielding 0.32 percent while the 5-Year Note yield was sitting at 1.29 percent. The 10-Year Note and 30-Year Bond yields were 2.41 percent and 3.50 percent, respectively. 

Currencies

The U.S. Dollar continued to strengthen on Thursday amid a "risk off" environment. Heading into the closing bell, the PowerShares DB US Dollar Index Bullish ETF (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/uup#NYSE">UUP</a>), which tracks the performance of the greenback versus a basket of foreign currencies, was up 0.59 percent to $22.19. 

The closely watched EUR/USD pair was down 0.58 percent to $1.3195. Other movers included the USD/JPY, which rose 0.85 percent adn the USD/CAD, which was last trading up 1.04 percent. The Aussie Dollar also fell 1.79 percent against the greenback on Thursday. 

Volatility and Volume

After not reacting to Wednesday's sell-off, the VIX soared on Thursday as falling prices across asset classes got traders' attention. At last check, the widely watched barometer of volatility expectations for the S&amp;P 500 was up almost 25 percent to 20.73. 

Volume was extremely heavy on Thursday as investors were taking big losses in bonds, stocks, and commodities. Around 263 million SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/spy#NYSE">SPY</a>) shares traded hands compared to a 3-month daily average of 134.5 million. 

Stock Movers

The ProShares UltraShort Silver ETF (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/zsl#NYSE">ZSL</a>) soared more than 16 percent on the day after a huge plunge in silver prices. 

GameStop (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/gme#NYSE">GME</a>) rose on news that Microsoft is reversing its decision on used games for the XBOX One and will not put restrictions on previously played console games. The stock was last trading up around 7 percent. 

Wright Medical Group (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/wmgi#NASDAQ">WMGI</a>) climbed a little better than 4 percent on Thursday after the company announced that MicroPort will acquire its OrthoRecon business for $290 million. 

Finisar (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/fnsr#NASDAQ">FNSR</a>) jumped around 9 percent after the company's fiscal fourth-quarter earnings results. Finisar also provided Q1 EPS guidance above consensus estimates. 

Ebix (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/ebix#NASDAQ">EBIX</a>) fell around 44 percent on Thursday after the company agreed to terminate a merger agreement with an affiliate of Goldman Sachs. The news came in the wake of a U.S. Attorney's investigation into allegations of intentional misconduct at the company. 

Shares of Navistar (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/nav#NYSE">NAV</a>) fell more than 11 percent on the day after S&amp;P lowered the company's credit rating. 

Homebuilders, including PulteGroup (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/phm#NYSE">PHM</a>), Ryland Group (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/ryl#NYSE">RYL</a>), and Toll Brothers (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/tol#NYSE">TOL</a>) all traded sharply lower on Thursday amid fears that rising mortgage rates will derail the recovery in housing. 

The plunge in gold prices on the day sent gold mining shares into a tailspin. Among the biggest losers was Yamana Gold (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/auy#NYSE">AUY</a>), which fell around 10 percent.

ETFs to Watch April 16, 2013 (FXC, GDX, ZSL)

Monday is just one day of market action, but a nasty one at that. While it pays not to get emotional over a single trading day, it also pays to be prepared.

	With just two weeks left in the month of April, it could be a good time to start preparing for the phenomenon known as "sell in May and go away."

	Of course, there are no guarantees that sell in May and go away will be the scenario that plays out this year, but history has shown time and again that the May through October time frame is often unkind to stocks. Notable is the fact that some sectors and assets classes have a tendency to wilt during the summer months and that under-performance often kicks off at some point in May.

	With that in mind, several marquee ETFs across various asset classes were examined for noticeable weakness in the May-June time period over the last two years. Investors will want to have a look at this list because the plain vanilla equivalents of the inverse ETFs highlighted here are among the most popular ETFs on the market today.

	iShares Silver Trust (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/slv#NYSE">SLV</a>) 
	The largest ETF backed by physical silver is down 15 percent in the past five trading days alone, perhaps a sign that the white metal is kicking off its seasonal weakness a couple of weeks early. Same goes for gold and both gold and silver end a period of historical weakness in May that usually lasts until early June.

	Looking at recent May performances for SLV, the ETF performed fell in 2011 and that was after silver fell from near record highs in April of that year. SLV's May 2011 decline was fraught with increased volatility as investors cringed at the notion of silver market manipulation. By the time June ended, SLV was trading lower than at any point during April.

	May 2012 was similarly unkind to SLV as the ETF slid about 10 percent during that month. Two months may not make a trend for some folks, but it is clear the last two Mays have been unkind to SLV and given the ETF's performance on Monday, the third May (May 2013) will not be the charm to right the course for SLV. All this is very good news for the ProShares UltraShort Silver (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/zsl#NYSE">ZSL</a>), which is up 38 percent in the past month.

	ProShares UltraShort FTSE China 25 (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/fxp#NYSE">FXP</a>) 
	Already disappointing to start 2013, long China ETFs were back in the spotlight Monday when the world's second-largest economy reported first-quarter GDP growth of 7.7 percent. That missed the consensus estimate of eight percent and the report has investors fretting over another summertime swoon for Chinese stocks.

	As it is, the iShares FTSE China 25 Index Fund (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/fxi#NYSE">FXI</a>) and other China ETFs have struggled mightily. FXI in particular has been hurt just because it is the largest China ETF, but also because several of its 26 holdings <a href="http://www.benzinga.com/media/cnbc/13/03/3432743/china-etfs-could-see-more-declines">have been showing obvious technical weakness</a>.

	FXI was basically flat in May 2011, but by mid-July, the ETF was down nearly 10 percent from the end of May. May 2012 was even worse as FXI lost 12.8 percent. The previous two summers have been cruel to FXI, but that will work in favor of the ProShares UltraShort FTSE China 25. If the double-leveraged bearish play on FXI trades above $22.75, a new up leg (or down leg for FXI) could be in the offing.

	ProShares UltraShort Oil &amp; Gas (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/dug#NYSE">DUG</a>) 
	The ProShares UltraShort Oil &amp; Gas seeks to provide twice the daily inverse performance of the Dow Jones U.S. Oil &amp; Gas Index, the same index tracked by the iShares Dow Jones U.S. Energy Sector Index Fund (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/iye#NYSE">IYE</a>).

	Energy ETFs have been impressive as far as high-beta sector funds go this year, but the risk is that this group will obey its own seasonality. That includes the best time frame in which to <a href="http://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/long-ideas/13/02/3327831/february-first-month-in-energy-bull-run-use-these-etfs-to-tra">own energy stocks ending in May</a>.

	IYE has obeyed that seasonality. The ETF fell slightly in May 2011 and those declines were extend through June before the surged into late July. That pop gave way to a 22 percent drop into early August. In May 2012, IYE dropped nearly 12 percent. Traders may be preparing for a repeat performance as DUG gained 7.6 percent on nearly quadruple its average daily volume today.

	With DUG, keep an eye on how Exxon Mobil (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/xom#NYSE">XOM</a>) and Chevron (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/cvx#NYSE">CVX</a>) are trading because those stocks combine for over 36 percent of IYE's weight.
