News Corp&#39;s&nbsp;(NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/nws#NASDAQ">NWS</a>) (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/nwsa#NASDAQ">NWSA</a>) British newspaper group, News Group Newspapers (NGN), settled multiple&nbsp;<a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/23/08/33599224/worried-your-pixel-phone-is-hacked-heres-how-to-check-using-googles-new-tool" style="color:#4a6ee0; background:transparent; margin-top:0pt; margin-bottom:0pt" target="_blank">phone-hacking</a>&nbsp;claims from various individuals, including celebrities and a former minister.&nbsp;
NGN, which publishes the Sun and the now-defunct News of the World, offered public apologies and paid substantial damages to those affected. Victims included Melanie Chisholm (Mel C) from the Spice Girls, actor Keith Allen, Shane Lynch from Boyzone, and a 2005 London bombing victim, Reuters reports.
The phone-hacking scandal first emerged in 2006 with the arrest and conviction of individuals linked to News of the World for accessing voicemails of British monarchy aides.

This scandal led to the closure of News of the World in 2011, the imprisonment of its editor and others, a public inquiry into press standards, and NGN paying tens of millions in damages.&nbsp;
NGN expressed its intent to conclude litigation for over 20 years.
Former energy minister Chris Huhne, another claimant, accused NGN of targeting him to derail his career.&nbsp;
He received a six-figure sum and urged police to reopen investigations. In Huhne&#39;s case, NGN denied any corporate motive, claiming its coverage was legitimate and in the public interest.
Further allegations against the Sun, including those from Prince Harry, are set for trial in 2025, though NGN denies any wrongdoing at the Sun.

Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) experienced a rollercoaster ride, surging as much as 6.5% at 10 a.m. only to nearly erase its gains by noon trading in New York.
Jitters returned to the Treasury market, with yields surging significantly on the long end of the curve. Lewis, a prominent media figure and previous head of Dow Jones, is taking the reins following voluntary staff reductions and a notable dip in digital subscribers at the Post.&nbsp;
The company last month announced voluntary buyouts to reduce its headcount by 240.
Washington Post owner&nbsp;Jeff Bezos&nbsp;announced the appointment in an email to staff shortly after The New York Times published the news.
Lewis, known for his tenure at the Wall Street Journal and recent venture targeting news delivery to the younger demographic, steps into the role as the Post grapples with financial sustainability issues.&nbsp;
Under his leadership, the organization aims to revitalize its readership and financial performance after it revealed a plan last month to slash its headcount to manage costs.
The appointment follows the departure of&nbsp;Fred Ryan, who left in June after a challenging period of stagnation despite successfully building the Post&#39;s digital footprint.&nbsp;
Patty Stonesifer, the former CEO of the Bill &amp; Melinda Gates Foundation, managed the interim period.&nbsp;
The company&#39;s subscriber count has suffered a steep decline, from a Trump-era peak to a current standing of 2.5 million digital subscribers, contrasting sharply with the burgeoning 9.2 million maintained by The New York Times.
In July, The Times&nbsp;<a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2023/07/22/business/media/jeff-bezos-washington-post.html" style="color:#4a6ee0; background:transparent; margin-top:0pt; margin-bottom:0pt" target="_blank">reported</a>&nbsp;that The Post is on track to lose about $100 million this year.

What Happened:&nbsp;NMA in its white paper and accompanying submission to the U.S. Copyright Office stated&nbsp;the data sets that trained AI models significantly used a bigger chunk of news publisher content compared to other sources.
This leads&nbsp;to AI generations copying and using publisher content in their outputs, infringing on their copyright. It puts the news outlets in competition with AI models.

&ldquo;Many generative AI developers have chosen to scrape publisher content without permission and use it for model training and in real-time to create competing products,&rdquo; NMA said.
The group&nbsp;argued&nbsp;that while news publishers make investments and take on risks, the AI developer was the one who was rewarded for users, data, brand creation and advertising dollars. The publishers also faced setbacks such as reduced revenues, employment opportunities&nbsp;and adversely affected relationships with their viewers.

The NMA did suggest&nbsp;using generative AI for proofreading, idea generation&nbsp;and search engine optimization only.
In the past year, the usage of OpenAI&rsquo;s ChatGPT, Google&rsquo;s Bard&nbsp;and Anthropic&rsquo;s Claude&nbsp;increased significantly. All have been criticized and faced copyright infringement claims in court.
In September 2023 it came to light that the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/23/09/34486737/new-york-times-may-sue-openai-over-chat-gpt-data-scraping">New York Times Co (NYSE: </a><a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/nyt#NYSE">NYT</a>) was considering legal action against&nbsp;OpenAI over ChatGPT data scrapping. Earlier in the year, <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/entertainment/23/07/33158772/sarah-silverman-and-other-authors-allege-openai-meta-wield-ai-tech-to-steal-info">Sarah Silverman and other authors sued</a> the open-source AI platform and Meta Platforms Inc.&nbsp;(NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/meta#NASDAQ">META</a>) over claims of copyright infringement. While NWSA currently de-emphasizes dividends to streamline its operations for the digital age, it still maintains a <a href="https://www.morningstar.com/stocks/xnas/nwsa/dividends">modest 1.55% total yield</a>, balancing operational adjustments with shareholder returns.



<h2>Marriott International (MAR)</h2>

The Walt Disney Company (<a href="https://stocknews.com/stock/DIS/">DIS</a>) has been making headlines with its impressive fourth-quarter earnings and robust fiscal 2024 guidance. Expectations that the company's streaming business will become profitable by the end of the year have propelled its share price by 29.7% year-to-date.
In this piece, I have discussed why it could be prudent to wait for a better entry point in the stock.
Following its first-quarter earnings, DIS announced it was on pace to meet or exceed its goal of cutting costs by at least $7.5 billion. The company has guided its fiscal 2024 EPS to be $4.60, which would be at least 20% higher than the previous year. It expects to generate a free cash flow of $8 billion in fiscal 2024. During the first quarter, DIS reported record Experiences' revenue, operating income, and operating margin.
DIS made a strategic move by investing <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2024/02/07/disney-to-take-1point5-billion-stake-in-epic-games-maker-of-fortnite.html">$1.5 billion for a stake in Epic Games</a>, the company behind the popular video game Fortnite. This significant investment marks DIS' entry into the highly lucrative gaming market. The company plans to collaborate with the Fortnite gaming studio on new games and an entertainment universe, signaling its commitment to diversification and potential for future growth.
Also, DIS announced that it would launch its <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2024/02/07/espn-will-launch-its-flagship-direct-to-consumer-service-in-fall-2025.html">direct-to-customer ESPN streaming service</a> in 2025. This announcement follows DIS's partnership with Fox and Warner Bros to launch their joint sports streaming service later this year, bringing together content from these companies' combined assets. Meanwhile, CEO Bob Iger <a href="https://edition.cnn.com/2024/04/03/business/disney-proxy-battle-bob-iger/index.html">successfully thwarted</a> pressure from activist investors who wanted to reshuffle the board and influence succession planning.
Bank of America has a "Buy" rating on the stock and raised its price target to <a href="https://finance.yahoo.com/news/disney-stock-20-upside-bob-030512498.html">$145 from $130 per share</a>. Analyst Jessica Reif Ehrlich said, "Bob Iger now appears to be in command and control and on a growth offensive. Park performance remains robust, and we project operating income to grow in the low-mid teens in F2Q."

For the fiscal first quarter ended December 30, 2023, DIS' revenues rose marginally year-over-year to $23.55 billion. Its net income attributable to DIS increased 49.4% over the prior-year quarter to $1.91 billion. The company's cash provided by operations came in at $2.19 billion, compared to cash used in operations of $974 million in the prior-year quarter. Also, its EPS came in at $1.04, representing an increase of 48.6% year-over-year.

Although the per-share price is well under $50, the stock has remained stubbornly within the $20 &ndash; $25 range, possibly as part of CEO Alex Karp&rsquo;s beef with short sellers.
