Big Blue Blossoms: On June 16, IBM will be celebrating its 110th year in business. Originally known as the Computing-Tabulating-Recording Company, it became International Business Machines in 1924; the company&rsquo;s thick-lettered logo gave it the nickname &ldquo;Big Blue.&rdquo;

Last October, the company announced it would split into two entities with the IBM operation concentrating on cloud computing and artificial intelligence solutions and a newly-formed company called Kyndryl that would become &ldquo;the world&rsquo;s leading managed infrastructure services provider,&rdquo; with relationships involving more than 4,600 clients in 115 countries.
While it reshapes corporate operations, it has also been busy on the tech front. Earlier this month, IBM <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/21/05/20989845/ibm-unveils-2-nanometer-semiconductor-chip-technology">introduced</a> the first semiconductor chip with 2-nanometer nanosheet technology, which the company said would achieve a 45% higher performance level &mdash; or 75% lower energy use &mdash; than the most advanced 7 nm node chips now in use.
IBM has also been laying the groundwork for a new generation of tech professionals via a new quantum education initiative with the nation&rsquo;s historically black colleges and universities and with an IT Infrastructure apprenticeship accelerator program designed to recruit and develop candidates who have no previous experience working in the technology field.
In its Q1 earnings announced last month, IBM reported $17.7 billion in revenue, a 1% year-over-year increase and the first increase after four consecutive quarters of revenue declines. The company&rsquo;s earnings per share (EPS) for the quarter were $1.06 a share and non-GAAP EPS was $1.77.
Among its business segments, it recorded positive quarterly revenue of $5.4 billion for its cloud and cognitive software business (up 3.8%), $4.2 billion for its global business services, including consulting and application management (up 2.4%), and $1.4 billion for its systems business, including hardware and operating systems software (up 2.2%).
But there were quarterly year-over-year declines for its global technology services, which include infrastructure and cloud services and technology support services ($6.4 billion, down 1.5%) and its global financing segment that includes financing and used equipment sales (revenues of $240 million, down 20%).
&ldquo;Strong performance this quarter in cloud, driven by increasing client adoption of our hybrid cloud platform, and growth in software and consulting enabled us to get off to a solid start for the year,&quot; said Arvind Krishna, IBM chairman and CEO. &quot;While we have more work to do, we are confident we can achieve full-year revenue growth and meet our adjusted free cash flow target in 2021.&rdquo;

The&nbsp;transaction was canceled due to the machinations of shareholders Carl Icahn and Darwin Deason, who also managed to replace the company&rsquo;s leadership with executives they preferred. By the time this contentious issue was settled in November 2019, Xerox turned its attention to a hostile takeover of HP Inc. (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/hpq#NYSE">HPQ</a>). The company ceased its efforts when the COVID-19 pandemic took root.
Last fall, Xerox&rsquo;s tech cred took a PR hit over a pair of widely reported cybersecurity breaches, a situation made all the more embarrassing because Xerox has sought to position itself as a cybersecurity expert. Adding to the mayhem was Icahn&rsquo;s mysterious insistence on increasing his stake in the company, which ballooned from 12.82% ownership in August 2020 to 17% in February 2021.
Still, the company has sought to maintain a proactive strategy in the face of its struggles. In February, it announced it would three create new businesses &mdash;&nbsp;Software, Financing and Innovation &mdash;&nbsp;although details on whether these will become separate entities like IBM&rsquo;s Kyndryl or subsidiaries has not been stated.
This year saw the company go&nbsp;on acquisition mini-spree by purchasing the augmented reality company CareAR in January and the Quebec-based document management provider Groupe CT Inc. in April; another Canadian firm, the software services provider Digitex Canada, was acquired in March 2020.
For its Q1 earnings, Xerox reported $1.71 billion of revenue, down 8.1% year-over-year, as well as $39 million in net income compared to a $2 million loss in Q1 2020. Its&rsquo; GAAP EPS was 18 cents, up 21 cents year-over-year, and its adjusted EPS was 22 cents, up by a penny from one year earlier.
Among its segments, Xerox&rsquo;s equipment sales generated $381 million in the first quarter, up from $325 million one year earlier. But revenues from its services, maintenance and rentals fell to $1 billion from the previous year&rsquo;s $1.2 billion and financing revenue dropped to $55 million from $59 million.
Still, CEO John Visentin remained optimistic, noting that as &ldquo;small and medium-sized business and enterprise clients planning to return more employees to the office, our differentiated offerings are well-positioned to serve their growing needs. The strength of our performance, portfolio and strategy give us confidence we will return Xerox to growth in 2021.&rdquo;
Xerox shares opened for trading at $24.31, much closer to its 52-week high of $26.96 than its 52-week low of $14.51.
The Verdict: Xerox attributed its wobbly Q1 to the continued closure of many offices as a result of the pandemic, but one can easily imagine a more vibrant earnings report in Q2 and Q3 as the increased levels of vaccinations and the return to increased levels of pre-pandemic normalcy takes root.
As for IBM, it is difficult to imagine what will take place once Kyndryl is fully spun off &mdash;&nbsp;tech industry reaction was mild, at best. And even though it offers cutting-edge solutions on cybersecurity, cloud computing and artificial intelligence, IBM doesn&rsquo;t quite captivate the way that the FAANG stocks command attention.
Nonetheless, IBM is in a stronger financial position compared to Xerox. And if it is not today&rsquo;s bright shiny object, it&#39;s nonetheless a solid and reliable addition to a portfolio.

Stock Wars: IBM Vs. Xerox

Xerox Holdings Corp. (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/xrx#NYSE">XRX</a>) ended its fourth quarter with a weaker financial picture and the expressed hope for a more solid 2021.
What Happened:&nbsp;The Norwalk, Connecticut-based company reported $77 million in fourth-quarter net profits Tuesday, a far cry from the $818 million it reported one year earlier.
The quarter&#39;s $1.93 billion in revenue represented a 21% year-over-year tumble, while the earnings of 58 cents per share were&nbsp;56% lower year-over-year.
The fourth quarter also saw the company shedding 750 positions worldwide, which gave Xerox a total global workforce reduction of 2,300 for the year.
Why It&#39;s Important:&nbsp;While Xerox&#39;s earnings report attributed much of its problems to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, which saw the rise of a remote workforce that did not require its office-centric technologies while working from home, many of the company&#39;s problems preceded the health crisis.
At the start of 2020, Xerox had managed to reach an amicable resolution with Japan&#39;s Fujifilm Holdings (Pink: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/fujiy#Pink">FUJIY</a>) following the contentious and litigious cancellation of their planned merger. But no sooner was Fujifilm Holdings in Xerox&#39;s rear-view mirror than it began to chase after HP Inc. (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/hpq#NYSE">HPQ</a>) in a hostile takeover that consisted of veiled public threats, brash displays of financial prowess and even the promise of free dinners for HP shareholders at a ritzy restaurant in the pricey New York suburb of Greenwich, Connecticut.
HP greeted the effort with a mix of bafflement and indifference, and Xerox abruptly halted its plans when the COVID-19 pandemic took root, leaving it with a public relations disaster.
As the year progressed, Xerox continued to have an optics problem. Activist investor Carl Icahn, Xerox&#39;s largest shareholder, became the center of media attention by increasing his ownership stake with a robust acquisition of shares.
Icahn&#39;s cantankerous behavior was also responsible for ending the Fujifilm Holdings merger and encouraging the doomed pursuit of HP, which made his share-buying spree even more curious. Also giving Xerox black eyes were a pair of widely reported cybersecurity breaches last fall, which was rather embarrassing because Xerox was trying to position itself as a cybersecurity expert.
What&#39;s Next:&nbsp;Xerox Vice Chairman and CEO John Visentin used the fourth- quarter earnings call to accentuate the positive while admitting a return to growth was not in the cards for this first quarter of this year.
In 2021, Xerox expects revenue of at least $7.2 billion in constant currency; operating cash flow from continuing operations to total at least $600 million; and free cash flow of at least $500 million, the CEO said.
&quot;We believe this is achievable even in the unlikely scenario businesses don&#39;t start reopening in a meaningful way in the first half. The benefit of a solid strategy is it&#39;s flexible in its application, yet strong in its foundation,&quot; he said.
Visentin also promised that 2021 will see the company &quot;adding workflow automation, machine learning, artificial intelligence and remote services to make our clients [and]&nbsp;employees&nbsp;more efficient while maintaining security.&quot;
Xerox&#39;s &quot;strong cash position provides flexibility to explore a wide range of M&amp;A opportunities,&quot; Visentin said.
Without mentioning Fujifilm Holdings or HP, Visentin held out the hope that the third time would be the charm for growing the company by uniting with another.

Trump: HHS, FUJIFILM Signed A Contract On Vaccine Manufacturing

Dr. Reddy's Laboratories Ltd. (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/rdy#NYSE">RDY</a>) announces partnering with FUJIFILM Corporation through FUJIFILM Toyama Chemical Co. Ltd. (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/fujiy#OTC">FUJIY</a>) and Global Response Aid (hereafter referred to as "GRA") for the development, manufacture and sales of Avigan&#174; Tablets (generic name: favipiravir), a potential treatment of COVID-19.
Under the tripartite agreement signed on 30th June 2020, FUJIFILM grants Dr. Reddy's the exclusive rights of manufacturing and also grants both Dr. Reddy's and GRA the rights to develop, sell and distribute Avigan&#174; in all countries other than Japan, China and Russia. Dr. Reddy's would have exclusive rights for development, selling and distribution of Avigan&#174; in India. Further, FUJIFILM would receive an upfront license fee and royalties on sales from Dr. Reddy's and GRA.
FUJIFILM will provide Dr. Reddy's and GRA with an array of data on Avigan&#174;'s preclinical and clinical studies that FUJIFILM has accumulated thus far. Dr. Reddy's and GRA will use this data for clinical studies targeting COVID-19 in regions where infection has been spreading. In addition, FUJIFILM will grant Dr.Reddy's right to use Avigan&#174;'s patents of formulation and manufacturing method. Dr. Reddy's will herewith establish a setup for manufacturing drugs of the same quality as Avigan&#174;, and utilize GRA's global sales network to supply the manufactured drugs swiftly and in a stable manner.
The FUJIFILM Group is currently conducting a clinical study on Avigan&#174; targeting COVID-19 patients in Japan and the US, and is working to increase the drug's production by partnering with domestic and overseas companies. Dr. Reddy's and GRA shall introduce the product in the market post all applicable approvals in the respective countries.

'White House pressures FDA on unproven Japanese drug' - POLITICO

A senior research analyst at Piper Sandler believes Gilead Sciences Inc.&#39;s (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/gild#NASDAQ">GILD</a>) Remdesivir antiviral may soon be approved for COVID-19 treatment.

<a href="https://www.tipranks.com/analysts/tyler-van-buren">Tyler Van Buren</a> maintains a Neutral rating on Gilead with a price target of $70.
<h3>The Gilead Thesis</h3>
Remdesivir has been shown to be effective against COVID-19. Clinical data indicates Remdesivir is safer than alternative Favipiravir and also more effective. Van Buren said data gathered from 200 patients is &ldquo;highly encouraging&rdquo; and Remdesivir drug trials are positive.
Trials conducted in China and Japan indicate that Favipiravir, which is&nbsp;manufactured by Toyama Chemical Co. owned by FUJIFILM Holdings Corp (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/fujiy#OTC">FUJIY</a>) under the brand name Avigan, also has <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/20/03/15577152/fujifilm-shares-skyrocket-as-china-says-its-flu-medicine-works-for-coronavirus">efficacy</a> against RNA viruses. The drug is somewhat effective in treating COVID-19,&nbsp;but needs to be used early on, according to Japanese officials.

Van Buren said there are currently five&nbsp;Remdesivir trials underway, of which two are in China. China&rsquo;s test results should be out by the end of the month. Gilead&rsquo;s own two trial results will follow next. These are shorter 14-day trials but with restrictive entry criteria. A 30-day NIAID Hospitalized US Adult Phase II trial is also being carried out to measure Remdesivir&rsquo;s efficacy against a placebo.
Remdesivir is likely to be approved for broad use in the coming months, Van Buren wrote in a note. Due to the COVID-19 epidemic, the U.S.&nbsp;Food and Drug Administration may consider fast-tracking approval.
<h3>GILD Price Action</h3>
Gilead shares traded 1.6% higher Thursday morning. The stock closed Wednesday&#39;s session 6.58% higher at $79.42.

Analyst Says Gilead's Remdesivir Could Be Approved 'Within Months' For COVID-19 Treatment

The shares of FUJIFILM Holdings Corporation (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/fujiy#OTC">FUJIY</a>) hit their daily permissible high limit on Wednesday&#39;s open in Tokyo.
<h3>What Happened</h3>
The massive jump in an otherwise bearish market came as China suggested that an influenza medicine developed by subsidiary FUJIFILM Toyama Chemical Co. Ltd. is also effective against the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).
&quot;It has a high degree of safety and is clearly effective in treatment,&quot; the director of the Chinese science ministry&#39;s China National Center for Biotechnology Development, Zhang Xinmin said, <a href="https://asia.nikkei.com/Spotlight/Coronavirus/China-says-Japan-developed-drug-Avigan-works-against-coronavirus">according</a> to the Nikkei Asian Review.
Japan has been administering the medicine to coronavirus patients since February, The Nikkei noted. Toyama Chemical developed the drug, sold under the brand name Avigan, in 2014 as a medicine to combat the flu.
<h3>Why It Matters</h3>
Zhejiang Hisun Pharmaceutical Co Ltd, which signed a patent-licensing agreement with Fujifilm for the generic drug Favipiravir, received approval from Chinese authorities in February to conduct clinical trials for effectiveness against COVID-19, as <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/brief-corrected-zhejiang-hisun-pharma-ge/brief-corrected-zhejiang-hisun-pharma-gets-approval-for-clinical-trial-to-test-flu-drug-favipiravir-for-pneumonia-caused-by-new-coronavirus-idUSL4N2AH0C8">reported</a> by Reuters at the time.
About 200 patients at hospitals in Chinese cities of Wuhan and Shenzhen are said to have participated in the trials, according to the Nikkei.
The spread of the coronavirus has slowed down drastically in China to double-digits, with a total of 81, 086 cases, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. More than 3,200 people have died from COVID-19 in China, and another 4,713 have died outside the country.
