At the 20th BAFTA Games Awards, Baldur’s Gate 3 took center stage, clinching five wins, including the prestigious Best Game title.

“I still can’t believe we’re standing here… thank you everybody,” Swen Vincke, the head of Larian Studios, said, the BBC reported.

Lead writer Sarah Baylus shared her sentiments, calling it “an honor and a privilege.” Meanwhile, Borislav Slavov, composer for Baldur’s Gate 3, couldn’t hold back tears as he thanked the audience for “this special moment in [his] life,” emphasizing the importance of putting heart into music.

Nintendo ADR‘s NTDOY Super Mario Bros. Wonder grabbed two awards, while Electronic Arts Inc‘s EA Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, despite six nominations, left empty-handed.

Viewfinder, a photography-based puzzler, garnered attention as the best British game. The event also highlighted industry growth, with UKIE reporting a rise in game software sales to £5.18bn in the UK last year.

Nexon Co Ltd‘s NEXOF Dave the Diver, though missing the top prize, celebrated victory in game design, with director Jaeho Hwang humorously remarking: “We just beat Zelda… now I’m bringing this heavy mask back to Korea!”

Amidst accolades, the ceremony reflected on the industry’s challenges, with host Phil Wang acknowledging job cuts within major game companies.

Nevertheless, presenters highlighted the artistic merit of game design, emphasizing its importance as an art form.

The event concluded on a poignant note, paying tribute to industry figures with a moving performance of “Late Goodbye” from Max Payne 2.
