Two years after launching the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/war-on-drugs">War on Drugs</a>, calling substance use &#8220;public enemy No. 1,&#8221; President Richard Nixon privately acknowledged marijuana was "not particularly dangerous." The admission came during a March 1973 Oval Office meeting with aides and was captured on Nixon&#8217;s secret recording system.
"Let me say, I know nothing about marijuana," Nixon said. "I know that it's not particularly dangerous, in other words, and most of the kids are for legalizing it. But on the other hand, it's the wrong signal at this time." He also mentioned harsh sentencing in cannabis cases. "The penalties should be commensurate with the crime." He called a 30-year sentence for marijuana-related offenses "ridiculous."
These comments were revealed in a series of tapes that have recently become accessible.
Kurtis Hanna, a Minnesota lobbyist and advocate for drug legalization, discovered the recordings while browsing the Nixon Library's archives. Hanna said he was surprised by Nixon's stance on cannabis, as it contradicted the public policies he spearheaded. It has also stymied scientific research into cannabis's potential medical benefits. To carry out his war on drugs, Nixon created the DEA in 1973. In a 2016 Harper's Magazine <a href="https://harpers.org/archive/2016/04/legalize-it-all/">article</a>, Dan Baum provided more details on drug prohibition and how it became a national obsession under Nixon.
Baum asked Nixon's top advisor, John Ehrlichman in 1994 how the U.S. got&nbsp;entangled in a drug prohibition policy that &#8220;yielded so much misery and so few good results."
"The Nixon campaign in 1968, and the Nixon White House after that, had two enemies: the antiwar left and Black people,&#8221; replied Ehrlichman who died in 1999. 
&#8220;We knew we couldn't make it illegal to be either against the war or blacks, but by getting the public to associate the hippies with marijuana and blacks with heroin, and then criminalizing both heavily, we could disrupt those communities," Ehrlichman&nbsp;admitted.&nbsp;"We could arrest their leaders, raid their homes, break up their meetings, and vilify them night after night on the evening news. Did we know we were lying about the drugs? Of course, we did."
On August 9, 1974, Nixon <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/education/19/08/12164014/this-day-in-market-history-richard-nixon-announces-resignation-1">resigned as president</a> due to <a href="https://www.history.com/topics/us-government/impeachment-in-us-history">impeachment proceedings</a> underway against him for his involvement in the Watergate affair. Cuban&#8217;s question was about more than money; he said it says much about Trump&#8217;s personality. Responding to another user who questioned the basis of his claim, Cuban noted that as a presidential candidate, Trump must file financial disclosures with the Federal Election Commission (FEC). Cuban mentioned that he couldn't find evidence of Trump investing in nonfamily businesses.

Big Week In Appleverse: iPhone 16, Watch Series 10, New AirPods Launch Amid Increasing Competition From China's Top Smartphone Maker

Former Democratic Senator Al Franken said in an interview with Bill Maher on Friday that President Joe Biden is wrong to impose tariffs on Chinese EVs. 
What Happened: The imposition of higher tariffs on Chinese imports is eventually passed down to the U.S. consumer and is not borne by China, Franken said on Friday about tariffs. 
While Franken was referring to Trump&#8217;s promise of 60% tariffs for all imports from China if voted President in the upcoming elections, Maher noted that Biden too has imposed higher tariffs on EVs made in China.
&#8220;Well in that case dammit, Biden&#8217;s wrong,&#8221; Franken said. 
Why It Matters: The U.S. Trade Representative&#8217;s office said on Friday that many of the tariffs announced by President Joe Biden earlier this year, including a 100% duty on Chinese EVs and a 25% duty on EV batteries, will take effect on Sept. 27. 
American EV giant Tesla Inc&#8216;s CEO Elon Musk previously slammed the tariffs <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/09/40825946/china-wants-automakers-to-safeguard-their-ev-technology-and-keep-it-within-the-country-as-companies">proposed by the Biden administration</a>, saying that neither Tesla nor he asked for them. 
&#8220;Things that inhibit freedom of exchange or distort the market are not good,&#8221; <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/05/39006664/elon-musk-slams-biden-administration-over-100-tariffs-on-chinese-ev-imports-things-that-distort-the">Musk said</a>. 
Ford Motor Co, meanwhile, requested that the proposed tariffs on artificial graphite be reduced given they are a key element in making EV batteries.

Coniagas Initiates Global Feed First Strategy on Critical Minerals with SGS Quebec

The United States and the United Kingdom are reportedly concerned that Russia is sharing classified information and technology with Iran which could help the latter build nuclear weapons. 
What Happened: Russia has been escalating its cooperation with Iran over its pursuit of atomic weapons, Bloomberg <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-09-14/us-uk-on-edge-as-russia-shares-nuclear-secrets-with-iran">reported</a>, citing Western officials familiar with the matter. Iran will, in turn, provide Russia with ballistic missiles for use in its ongoing war with Ukraine, they said. 
The issue was a point of discussion between US and UK officials in Washington this week when British Prime Minister Keir Starmer met U.S. President Joe Biden at the White House, the report added. 
Why It Matters: The U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken alluded to this exchange of nuclear technology during a press conference in London last week. He then said that Russia had received a shipment of Iran's Fath-360 ballistic missiles, Bloomberg reported.
"For its part, Russia is sharing technology that Iran seeks — this is a two-way street — including on nuclear issues, as well as some space information," Blinken said.
Despite Iran&#8217;s insistence that it has no plans to develop nuclear weapons, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) observed a surge in Iran&#8217;s nuclear fuel levels between June and August, raising concerns. 
The possible collaboration between Iran and Russia on nuclear weapons could further aggravate the two ongoing wars around the globe, including the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/government/24/09/40862471/turkeys-spy-chief-meets-with-hamas-to-discuss-cease-fire-in-gaza-reports">Israel-Hamas war</a> and the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/09/40851131/russian-president-says-ukraines-use-of-long-range-missiles-would-signal-that-us-and-nato-are-at-war">Russia-Ukraine war</a>.
