The 2020 conviction of former Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein for sexual assault and rape has been overturned by New York&#8217;s highest court. The decision, announced on Thursday, has reopened the landmark case that sparked the #MeToo movement.
The state Court of Appeals ruled 4-3 that the trial judge made a critical error by allowing women to testify that Weinstein assaulted them, even though their accusations were not part of the charges he faced. This, they said, impacted Weinstein&#8217;s decision not to testify in his own defense, reported Reuters.
The office of Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg has indicated plans to retry Weinstein. &#8220;The remedy for these egregious errors is a new trial,&#8221; Judge Jenny Rivera wrote for the majority.

Despite the overturned conviction, Weinstein, who is currently serving a 23-year sentence in a prison in upstate Rome, New York, is not expected to be released immediately. He still faces a separate 16-year prison term in California for a 2013 rape conviction.

He further noted that Trump&#8217;s &#8220;malicious and unceasing attacks&#8221; on Carroll, which reached over 100 million people, included public threats and personal attacks, putting Carroll&#8217;s health and safety at risk.

Roberta Kaplan, Carroll&#8217;s attorney, expressed satisfaction with the court&#8217;s decision, stating it was &#8220;entirely reasonable&#8221; for the jury to award Carroll $83 million in damages given Trump&#8217;s continued defamation during the trial.

The White House has turned down Republican Speaker Mike Johnson&#8217;s (R-La.) call to deploy the National Guard on college campuses that are witnessing large-scale protests over the Israel-Hamas conflict.
What Happened: House Speaker Johnson, on Thursday, urged President Joe Biden to mobilize the National Guard to suppress the widespread protests on college campuses related to the Israel-Hamas war, as <a href="https://thehill.com/homenews/administration/4622494-white-house-biden-republican-national-guard-college-israel-palestine-protests/">reported</a> by The Hill. Johnson had visited Columbia University on Wednesday, where the first major pro-Palestine protest took place and has since proliferated to several colleges across the country.
In response, White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre clarified on Thursday that the power to deploy the National Guard lies with state governors, not the president. Jean-Pierre also reminded that President Biden has previously condemned the protests as antisemitic.
&#8220;That is something for the governors to decide," she told reporters, according to the report.
