According to Square Enix, the intention behind this change is to become &#8220;more selective and focused in the allocation of development resources.&#8221; 
This decision follows a thorough evaluation of the company&#8217;s development pipeline. Unfortunately, Square Enix did not disclose the specific titles affected by these cancellations or revisions.
Square Enix&#8217;s decision comes amidst ambitious forecasts: in February, it projected a 16.8% increase in full-year sales, reaching 360 billion yen (about $2.3 billion), while anticipating flat profits at 55 yen billion (approximately $350 million). However, the company is now re-evaluating these projections to account for the impact of the recent writedown.
Despite these challenges, Square Enix has released notable titles in the past year, including Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and Final Fantasy 16, with plans for upcoming releases such as Dawntrail for Final Fantasy 14 and games like Kingdom Hearts 4 and Dragon Quest 12 in development.

We are entering an era of global regulatory change and a medical cannabis explosion that can only be likened to the early days of U.S. and Canadian legalization back in 2014. This time, the most influential economies &mdash; the U.S. and Germany &mdash; and a significant health regulatory agency &mdash;&nbsp; the FDA &mdash; have put an official stamp on cannabis as a medicine.
<h3>The Impact Of The HHS Report On Cannabis: Sparking Change</h3>
This movement started with a 252-page HHS report filed in August of 2023 and made public in January 2024 thanks to the Freedom of Information Act. The <a href="https://norml.org/blog/2024/01/12/hhs-releases-unredacted-letter-confirming-agencys-recommendation-to-dea-to-reclassify-marijuana-to-schedule-iii/">report is packed with medical evidence as to the safety of cannabis</a> and declares that cannabis is beneficial for at least 15 medical indications.&nbsp;
The HHS and FDA made these determinations after reviewing two decades of cannabis use in the United States, citing reports from over 6,000,000 patients and 30,000 prescribing physicians. The report unequivocally states that cannabis is safe. It goes on to clarify that cannabis is safer than current pharmaceutical alternatives and provides the lowest risk of overdose deaths and hospitalization. Additionally, the report cites benefits for multiple medical indications, including neuropathic pain, Crohn&#39;s disease, and anorexia.&nbsp;
This is, without a doubt, the most impactful report on the pathway toward medical legalization thus far, and regulators worldwide are analyzing it for their own markets.

Nonetheless, this was a very bold move. Germany&rsquo;s progress will certainly draw other EU countries into the future and force the WHO to adopt a more progressive stance on cannabis going forward, even after the <a href="https://www.who.int/teams/health-product-and-policy-standards/controlled-substances/who-review-of-cannabis-and-cannabis-related-substances">organization identified cannabis as a medicine in December 2020</a>.&nbsp;
<h4>German Medical Cannabis Ushers In Change Across Europe</h4>
Since Germany started this process in 2024, countries like <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/dariosabaghi/2024/01/15/czech-republic-unveils-cannabis-legalization-plan-without-legal-market/">Czechia</a> have already adopted a liberal program similar to Germany&rsquo;s. Countries like <a href="https://businesscann.com/spains-medical-cannabis-law-to-be-ready-in-the-coming-months-says-health-minister/">Spain</a> and <a href="https://businessofcannabis.com/frances-government-takes-major-step-towards-medical-cannabis-generalisation/">France</a> have begun opening their medical cannabis markets to more conservative extracted product forms. Germany has pushed the EU market regulators to confront legalizing medical access to patients.

And now, to cap the advancements of cannabis in the first quarter of 2024, the U.S. is finally moving cannabis from <a href="https://www.dea.gov/drug-information/drug-scheduling">Schedule I to Schedule III</a>.&nbsp;
Politics were overridden by the administrative actions of the HHS and DEA, seemingly aided by a push from the White House. The rescheduling of cannabis means that, on an institutional level, the U.S. government endorses cannabis as a medicine.&nbsp;
<h3>How U.S. Rescheduling Will Shape The Cannabis Industry</h3>
Rescheduling ends decades of debates on cannabis and knocks the pegs out of any argument that bills like the <a href="https://www.americanbar.org/groups/business_law/resources/business-law-today/2024-february/safer-banking-act/">Secure and Fair Enforcement Regulation (SAFER) Banking Act</a> or <a href="https://www.congress.gov/bill/118th-congress/house-bill/2772">Gun Rights and Marijuana (GRAM) Act</a> should not pass.&nbsp;
Although the new Schedule III listing won&rsquo;t immediately help most cannabis companies, we expect further regulations to become more lenient. However, the most important result for the global regulatory markets is that the United States has also deemed cannabis a medicine.&nbsp;
<h3>A Bright Future For Regulated And Medical Cannabis In 2024</h3>
The HHS report, German declassification, and U.S. rescheduling resulted in global regulatory market change and an explosion in medical cannabis regulations across the globe. 2024 will likely bring a constant flow of new countries announcing regulations, and I expect the year to be marked as the most significant inflection point in global cannabis history. The move comes as fund-backed startup Ghost Autonomy announced its shutdown five months after receiving a significant investment. This <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/money/aura">highlights the volatile, yet lucrative, nature of startup investing and venture capital.&nbsp;</a>

OpenAI announced via a Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filing that Altman was no longer the owner and controller of the fund.&nbsp;
&nbsp;&#8220;As previously communicated, the fund&#8217;s initial GP [general partner] structure was a temporary arrangement and involved no personal investment or financial interest from Sam. This change provides further clarity," an OpenAI representative told Axios.&nbsp;
Ian Hathaway, who has been a partner in the fund alongside Altman since 2021, will assume the role of manager.
The board had removed Altman from his position as CEO because of a lack of confidence in his leadership abilities. He was reinstated a week later following pushback from OpenAI employees.

Since 2021, the OpenAI Startup Fund has invested $175 million in 17 companies. Its portfolio includes innovative businesses like Descript, Harvey AI, Mem and Speak.
Ghost Autonomy, which the fund invested in five months ago, announced its shutdown this week through a letter on its website.&nbsp;
The auto company, which raised $5 million from the OpenAI Fund and gained access to OpenAI systems and Azure resources from Microsoft Corp., cited the uncertain path to long-term profitability and the current funding climate as reasons for its closure.
"The path to long-term profitability was uncertain given the current funding climate and the long-term investment required for autonomy development and commercialization. We are exploring potential long-term destinations for our team's innovations," the note stated.
In addition to its investment from the OpenAI Fund, Ghost Autonomy raised a total of $220 million from investors.
Altman&#8217;s removal from the fund and the shutdown of Ghost Autonomy highlight the volatile nature of the tech and AI industries.&nbsp;

What Happened: The airdrop, a strategy to distribute 45% of the 1.67 billion tokens to the community, will commence with a phased rollout that initially grants 5% of the tokens across multiple seasons. 
This strategy notably emphasizes rewarding individuals who have staked with the protocol.
However, the plan also introduced a contentious issue: the initial non-transferability of the tokens. 
EigenLayer announced that the tokens would be non-transferable for several months post-launch, a decision intended to allow time for the development of decentralization and to solidify community consensus on the token&#8217;s utility and governance.
Crypto analyst Aman <a href="http://Www.cryptoamanclub.com">emphasizes</a> the complexity of the situation, noting that &#8220;EigenLayer promised to allocate 15% of EIGEN supply to the community, yet only 5% of the initial allocation went to early users who participated in Season One.&#8221; 
This has led to confusion and dissatisfaction among stakeholders, who expected a more substantial share. Furthermore, the restriction that tokens could not be transferred or sold until a later, undisclosed date compounded the community&#8217;s frustration.
The non-transferability issue is particularly prickly because it impacts the liquidity and immediate value realization for participants receiving the airdrop, potentially trapping their capital without immediate recourse or benefit.
Chris Hermida, the co-founder and CEO of Switchboard, an oracle network, says this has been one of the most anticipated launches of the year and trying to balance the interests of many stakeholders at their scale involves tradeoffs. 
&#8220;You can't please everyone, but given the demand for AVS's, yield, and the need for economic security on certain types of applications, I don't think it will slow down interest on the builder front even if the launch potentially results in less Ethereum (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/eth/usd">ETH</a>) being staked on Eigenlayer in the short term,&#8221; says Hermida.

Additionally, VPN users are blocked from participating, despite being able to use the platform for other activities. 
This inconsistency has sparked further criticism among excluded users who feel unfairly treated by the airdrop&#8217;s eligibility criteria.
The complexity of the tokenomics and the underlying concepts described in EigenLayer's whitepaper have also been points of contention. 
Terms like "Universal Intersubjective Work Token" and &#8220;intersubjective forking&#8221; have been critiqued as overly complicated, potentially alienating less technically-inclined users.
Confusion also arose regarding the eligibility of Pendle users, with initial communications suggesting they might be excluded from the airdrop. 
Although this was later clarified to include Pendle users in receiving a portion of the airdrop, the damage had been done, with Pendle's price dropping 16% since the announcement.
Industry Leaders Weigh In
Experts point out that heightened expectations among crypto users about receiving airdrops have perhaps reached an unsustainable peak, influenced by the frequency and visibility of recent airdrops.
Markus Levin, co-founder of XYO Network, contextualizes the challenges, stating, &#8220;Carrying an airdrop is no easy task. It's technically challenging, and there are also legal and regulatory challenges.&#8221; 
Rebecca Liao, CEO of Saga, echoes this sentiment, pointing out the difficulty in balancing rewarding users and managing expectations. 
&#8220;There are a lot of users who simply farm any and all protocols for points, with the intention of dumping their airdrops as soon as they're live,&#8221; she explains. 
This behavior stresses the need for strategic airdrop campaigns that consider long-term engagement and genuine contribution to the ecosystem, rather than transient participation.
Impact On EigenLayer's Operations And Future
The backlash has already had tangible effects on EigenLayer&#8217;s operations. 
Data from Dune Analytics indicates a significant spike in withdrawals in the last 24 hours, with approximately 150,000 ETH ($457 million) removed from the platform. 
Despite this, the total value locked in EigenLayer's smart contracts remains robust at $15.6 billion, indicating that the platform still holds a strong position in the market for now.
Mohak Agarwal, CEO &amp; Founder of Claystack says upcoming airdrops will prioritize transparency over mystery. 
He adds that while the mysterious approach may initially evoke excitement, it often leads to disappointment later on, as seen in recent airdrops like Etherfi and Renzo &#8211; prompting structural changes after announcing the initial airdrop. 
&#8220;This pattern suggests a tendency for projects to announce a small airdrop supply initially, anticipating user disappointment, and then offering additional tokens to appease them—a short-term fix that isn&#8217;t sustainable in the long run. Additionally, I anticipate a shift towards implementing anti-Sybil protections from the outset, rather than removing users at a later stage, &#8221; Agarwal says.

Here's the latest on Reynolds&#8217;s soccer ventures.
 What Happened: <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/ryan-reynolds">Actors Reynolds </a>and Rob McElhenney bought a stake in Necaxa, a Mexican soccer team that plays in Liga MX.
Exiting owners of Necaxa include actress Eva Longoria and investors Al Tylis and Sam Porter, according to <a href="https://variety.com/2024/biz/news/ryan-reynolds-rob-mcelhenney-club-necaxa-eva-longoria-wrexham-1235985035/">Variety</a>.
The move followed Reynolds and McElhenney buying the Welsh soccer team Wrexham FC, which is one of the oldest soccer teams in the world. The acting duo brought an increased fan base to the team and help it through several promotions.
Terms of the deal were not announced, but the minority investment was believed to be significant according to sources. 
Club Necaxa was valued in the low nine-figure range in 2021 when Tylis, Porter and Longoria bought around 50% of the franchise. The team was valued at around $200 million in a 2022 funding round that brought on new investors.

Why It's Important: While no media plans have been announced, Reynolds and McElhenney's purchase of Wrexham previously led to the docuseries "Welcome to Wrexham" airing on FX, a unit of Walt Disney Co (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DIS#NYSE">DIS</a>).

Necaxa's media rights in the U.S. currently belong to Univision, which is owned by TelevisaUnivision, a joint venture which counts Grupo Televisa (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TV#NYSE">TV</a>) as the largest holder.
Major League Soccer previously discussed a merger with Liga MX. The two leagues have the Leagues Cup, which includes teams from both countries.
The new celebrity owners could help boost overall attention to Necaxa and Liga MX.
While Necaxa had a string of success in the 1990s the team has struggled in recent years. In the 2023-2024 season, the team ranked ninth in Liga MX. The previous season saw a 17th place out of 18 teams finish in the Liga MX.
Similar to other soccer leagues, but unlike the MLS, Liga MX uses a promotion and relegation system that moves up the best teams each season and moves down the worst teams. The league suspended this system in 2020 in a move to last through 2026.
Returning Necaxa to a higher position in the league and boosting the fan base could help the team negotiate better television deals on its own.
