Scholastic Corp (NASDAQ: SCHL) shares fell 12.20% to $30.58 in after-hours trading Thursday after the company reported its fiscal 2027 first-quarter financial results.
Scholastic is a children’s publishing, education and media company serving schools, families and communities worldwide.
Fiscal 2027 Results
Scholastic reported first-quarter fiscal 2027 revenue of $216.8 million, down 4% from $225.6 million in the prior-year quarter. The company said the decline primarily reflected lower revenue in Education and Children’s Book Publishing and Distribution, along with the elimination of rental income following its December 2025 sale-leaseback transactions.
The company reported a GAAP net loss of $93.7 million, or $3.77 per diluted share, compared with a net loss of $97 million, or $2.83 per share, a year earlier.
Adjusted EBITDA was a loss of $63.6 million, compared with a loss of $55.7 million in the prior-year period.
Segment Performance
Education revenue fell $9.7 million to $30.4 million, which Scholastic attributed to continued pressure on school and district funding and spending on supplemental curriculum materials.
Entertainment revenue increased $6.5 million to $20.1 million, primarily due to higher production revenue.
Children’s Book Publishing and Distribution revenue declined $3.6 million to $105.8 million.
Fiscal 2027 Guidance
Scholastic affirmed its fiscal 2027 outlook for revenue growth of approximately 2% to 4% and Adjusted EBITDA of approximately $135 million to $145 million. The company also continues to expect free cash flow of approximately $35 million to $40 million.
