Going Long on a security means an investor has purchased the respective commodity, stock, or bond with the intent of the security increasing in value in the future. Often times going long on a security or having a long position means the investor is not expecting to sell within the near future.
If an investor says they are are long on Company X, it usually means they have bought stock in X and are expected for shares of X to increase in value in mid- to long-term future.
Going long, intending to profit by selling a security for a higher price than it was bought at, is the opposite of short selling where the investor makes money on securities depreciating in value.
