As the upfronts begin in New York City this week, NBC (parent company, Comcast Corporation CMCSA), as per tradition, got an early jump on Sunday by releasing its new fall schedule. Surprisingly though, despite ordering a number of freshman series over the last few days, only three will join the mix around September.
The new additions include time-travel drama "Timeless," Heaven-based comedy "The Good Place" and ensemble drama "This Is Us."
Given NBC's success last season with launching new series, the network enters the upfront with a sense of strength, which will be buoyed by the addition of the Summer Olympics and a new slate of Thursday night prime-time football games.
The network also made a handful of tweaks to the schedule, which sends a few shows to new nights and times. Among the most high-profile are "Blindspot" going from closing the night on Mondays to opening the night on Wednesdays, and "Chicago Med" shifting to Thursday and serving as a lead-in for "The Blacklist."
Following the fall, NBC will unveil new additions to its "Chicago" and "The Blacklist" franchises, as well as a slew of new half-hour comedies that executives hope will rejuvenate its struggling comedy division.
