In terms of sheer numbers, nobody had a better showing following Thursday's Academy Award nominations announcement then Fox. As the studio behind both The Revenant and The Martian, Fox
FOXA
corralled 26 total nominations. The haul also includes nominations for Brooklyn, Joy and Youth. In addition, the studio earned 6 nominations for Bridge of Spies which it shares with Disney
DIS
. All told Fox has a hand in four of the eight films tapped for Best Picture consideration. Next up was Disney which had 14 nominations, a large number of which coming from Star Wars: The Force Awakens which (as expected) cleaned up in the technical categories but was slighted in the higher profile races. The studio also picked up nominations for animated smash Inside Out in key categories such as Best Animated Film and Best Original Screenplay. Time Warner's
TWX
lead film division Warner Bros. followed in third with 10 of its 11 eleven nominations coming Mad Max: Fury Road. The action film defied all the odds as this is not the type of film that usually gets nominated. Fury Road mostly picked up technical awards but notably scored a coveted slot in the Best Director and Best Picture races. The studio's lone nomination from outside the Mad Max world was for Sylvester Stallone's supporting role in Creed. Stallone becomes just the sixth person to be nominated multiple times for playing the same character. The actor becomes the sentimental favorite to win as his only prior nominations came 39 years ago. The 88th Annual Academy Awards will air Sunday February 28 on ABC with Chris Rock serving as host.
