Instagram Joins Play Store 1 Billion Install Club, But You'd Be Surprised Who's Not On The List

Facebook Inc FB-owned Instagram joins just 18 other apps in existence to boast 1 billion downloads on the Google Play Store.

According to Android Police, Instagram joins Facebook's core social media app, WhatsApp and Messenger as being members of the 1 billion club.

However, the download counter doesn't differentiate between unique installs or not. In other words, a user that downloads the app on a smartphone and tablet counts as two separate downloads even though it was from the same end user.

The 1 billion download mark is impressive and intriguing. Perhaps even more interesting is the list of companies whose app is absent from the 1 billion mark.

For instance, King Digital's Candy Crush, now owned by Activision Blizzard, Inc. ATVI, was the biggest mobile craze as it seemed everyone had the game installed on their devices. However, the app only boasts 500 million downloads. The same can be said for Microsoft Corporation's MSFT Skype, as well as Twitter Inc TWTR.

Netflix, Inc. NFLX has only been downloaded 100 million times, which happens to be twice as many downloads as Amazon.com, Inc.'s AMZN Shopping App.

The other interesting question many are asking is who will become the 20th member of the 1 billion club? Will Twitter beat out Snapchat? What about Pinterest?

We will find out soon enough.
