It's Not You: Recode's Mossberg Says TVs are Still Too Complicated

Here's a scenario that never seems to get easier: Picking out the right TV.

First there is the size of the TV to worry about, then decided between LCD, Plasma, OLED or the new 4K. In a blog post, Recode's tech journalist Walt Mossberg suggested that picking a new TV is a daunting task.

If one of the most respected tech journalists for one of the leading technology and Silicon Valley focused news websites has trouble picking out a TV, chances are it is more difficult for the rest of us.

Mossberg stated that the in-store experience in selecting a TV is often "poor" and the actual setting up of the TV takes "plenty of time and effort." After purchasing a new TV, a 55-inch LG OLED B series, tweaking all of the features took hours as it requires wading through multiple menus each of which contains multiple choices.

Overall, Mossberg rated his new TV with a "C-" grade for overall execution. He noted that the features are indeed impressive but just takes too much time.

The experience prompted Mossberg to recall the days when he was on the receiving end of TV advice from none other than Apple Inc. AAPL's ex-CEO, the late Steve Jobs. In fact, as Mossberg stated, Jobs "believed towards the end of his life that the TV as a device was ripe for disruption."

This was something Jobs "never got a chance to do," but "somebody should" because operating a $2,800 TV needs to be easier than it already is.
