Google's YouTube Set to Roll Out Kids App Next Week

Google Inc.'s GOOGL YouTube is set to release a service called the YouTube Kids app. This app is designed especially for children as the search giant is on the lookout for a new audience.

The app will run on smartphones and tablets. It will aim at creating a safe environment for kids by incorporating age-appropriate videos, channels and playlists. According to reports by Reuters, the app will feature a kids-friendly design, with big icons and minimal scrolling.

The app will also be incorporated with parental controls. For example, it will have a timer that can be used to limit a child's screen time.

The app will be free and will be initially rolled out in the U.S only, on devices with the Android operating system via the Google Play store.

Google has partnered with the likes of DreamWorks TV, National Geographic and The Jim Henson Co. for this new app.

This news was first reported by the Wall Street Journal. Its report said that Google is planning to reveal the new app at a children's entertainment industry conference on Feb 23, 2015. It will also be available for download from the unveiling.

Internet giants like Google and social networking site Facebook FB do not permit the use of its services by children who are under 13. This new app will give Google a broader audience base.

Google currently holds a Zacks Rank # 3 (Hold).
