It seems that even a guy who can afford to buy anything can still have dreams that are unfulfilled. The
Mercury News
reports that before Apple
AAPL
settled on Cupertino, California for its mammoth headquarters, Steve Jobs had wished to build his domain in San Jose. Jobs was so serious about building his state-of-the-art HQ in San Jose that he planned to acquire the talents of I.M. Pei, a world-renowned architect. But after 28 years, Jobs has not given up on his dream. "What sticks in my mind is he clearly saw the potential in San Jose," Tom McEnery (who was the mayor of San Jose when Jobs approached him about his plans) told the Mercury News. "We could have a great set of campuses, a la Stanford Industrial Park." Bob Feld, a former real estate consultant, concurred. "I am absolutely thrilled that after everything he has gone through, physically and everything else, that he still has this desire to take on something of this magnitude," Feld told the Mercury News. "To me, it's as if time hasn't shifted –30 years, same vision, same scope, same dream." That “something” Feld refers to is Jobs' plan for a new,
futuristic-looking
HQ. According the Mercury News, Jobs had planned to leave most of the San Jose property – located at Coyote Valley – in its natural state, incorporating the hillside without eliminating any of the trees. "In my mind, he was very unequivocal about the vision he saw there,” Feld added. “He did not come across as 'Let me think about it.' When we landed there, he was seeing things, he was seeing it right there that minute. There was no hesitancy."
