South Korea Is On The 'Cutting Edge' Of Technology, Could Revolutionize Hackathon Space

South Korean students once hoped to get a job at SAMSUNG ELECT LTD(F) SSNLF or another conglomerate after graduating. Today they dream of something a little different.

Bloomberg reported that technology startups soared in 2011, rising 83 percent in South Korea. This growth spurt occurred as students recognized the potential for entrepreneurial individuals who set out to do their own thing -- typically by coding new software, websites and apps.

Needless to say, South Korea quickly became the new startup hub in Asia. Now the nation is on the verge of tackling another milestone: it will house the world's largest hackathon.

Global Hackathon Seoul will make its debut on July 29, 2015. The four-day event (which takes place in Seoul, South Korea) includes a cornucopia of festivities that will allow individuals to show off their coding talent. In the end, it just might prove to be the best place to construct a concept for a new app or service -- or impress an employer searching for tomorrow's geniuses.

"I think some interesting stuff comes out of [hackathons]," Court Coursey, managing partner at TomorrowVentures (the investment vehicle from Eric Schmidt), told Benzinga. "I think they're very beneficial."

Coursey noted that there is a lot of "really interesting stuff" coming out of Korea.

"Korea is a really good marketplace," he said, adding that from a pure technology standpoint, it is "definitely very cutting edge."

With 80,000 square feet of hacking space and 2,000 hackers slated to attend, Global Hackathon Seoul hopes to redefine the world of hackathons. As a global hacking event, its attendees will come from all over the world, paving the way for unique collaborations that may not have occurred at any other hackathon. Any student (from anywhere in the world) can apply.
