Startup introduces Octopus - wearable to abolish power struggles between parents and child

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) June 07, 2016

Today Joy, recent graduates of the HAX accelerator, launched a Kickstarter to raise $50K over 45 days for an icon-based watch and scheduler that teaches kids ages 3-8 good habits and the concept of time. Units are available on Kickstarter for $49.

Octopus is like training wheels for good habits. It's a colorful, water-resistant watch and scheduler that young kids can read and understand. Unlike other children's clocks, it's wearable and visual. It even comes with an optional gamification model to help empower kids and provide positive reinforcement.

"Studies have shown that children under eight years old struggle with the concept of time. This can lead to power struggles surrounding chores, appointments and managing personal hygiene," said Sam Hickmann, Co-Founder and CEO of Joy. "We set out to build a wearable device that leverages the power of visual prompts to help manage daily routines and manage expectations."

Octopus is a:

  • Watch - Displays the time alongside icons that connect to specific events in a child's day. Evolves as your child grows and becomes more autonomous and accustomed to reading time (time + icon > digital clock > analogue clock).
  • Scheduler - Parents can easily program reminders from their smartphone to display on their kid's watch. Parents receive task reminders and can subtly track their child's progress.
  • Assistant - Helps parents prioritize expectations and be consistent with maintaining daily routines.

The Octopus app can sync with multiple watches, and each watch can be attached to multiple smartphones for parental control. The wearable can store up to 600 icons and comes with an accompanying Octopus charger (which doubles as a fun night light).

"We believe that success starts with good habits," continued Hickmann. "We're on a mission to reinvent how parents share time with their children. Less stress, fewer power struggles, and more quality family time."

The Octopus Kickstarter campaign runs from June 7, 2016 until July 22, 2016. For a full rundown of the pledge levels, visit the Kickstarter page.
