A record amount of men are seeking aesthetic dermatology treatments to look and feel younger! Cosmetic dermatology treatments are not only a woman's thing; men are seeing them in record numbers to stay competitive in our digital "selfie" culture, according to Charles E. Crutchfield III, MD of Crutchfield Dermatology.

Last year, men had more than 1 million non-surgical cosmetic dermatology treatments such as Botox, dermal fillers and laser resurfacing, a report from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) found. The amount of cosmetic treatments men are having has skyrocketed over 200% in recent years.

"Men are spending more time and money on their appearance than ever before," says medical and aesthetic dermatologist Charles E. Crutchfield III MD. "Men want to look youthful and competitive at work. There is also acceptance of cosmetic procedures and the added pressure of regularly sharing photos on social media. Men have learned they can easily get a refreshed look with no downtime. The ease has made cosmetic treatments extremely attractive to busy professional men."

Dr. Crutchfield says these are three of the most popular treatments for men:

Botox when you look tired or angry in the eye area.

Botox is the best known injectable treatment using botulinum toxin to paralyze muscle activity. Botox relaxes the facial muscles that contribute to wrinkles. Treatment with Botox has been the single most common cosmetic procedure in recent years, accounting for more than 40% of all aesthetic procedures in men.

"Eyes are one of the first parts of your face to give away a man's age," says Dr. Crutchfield. "Botox easily and quickly rejuvenates and smooths the eye area. It can target frown lines between the eyebrows; crow's feet at the corner of your eyes; and side-to-side lines on the forehead that form when you raise your eyebrows. Looking tired or angry ages us, and Botox can help eliminate that."
What to expect: A tiny needle will inject Botox under the skin with minimal pain. Numbing medication can be applied before the treatment, and you can go back to your day right after the quick procedure. Expect the results to last 3 to 4 months.

Laser resurfacing for brown spots and age spots:

Prolonged sun exposure causes brown age spots that are easily erased with laser resurfacing treatments. These treatments use short, concentrated pulsating light beams to remove the spots. Also known as a laser peel, this procedure gets rid of damaged skin cells on the surface of your skin.

"Laser resurfacing can also help remove fine lines and skin irregularities such as shallow acne scars," Dr. Crutchfield explains. "This treatment changes your skin from the inside. The laser causes collagen production that is found in youthful skin."
What to expect: The procedure can last anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the skin damage. A local anesthetic can be used. Protecting your skin with sunscreen is important after the procedure to prevent new spots from forming.

Dermal fillers for wrinkles and lost facial fullness

Aging faces tend to lose the fullness of a younger face. Fillers help create a smoother and fuller appearance. An area commonly treated by men are the nasolabial folds, the creases on the sides of the mouth going up toward the nose.

"While Botox takes about a week to become fully effective, fillers immediately take effect," Dr. Crutchfield says. "Fillers can also be used for a number of imperfections. They can create a square jaw line; build out a chin; or reduce jowls to create confidence in men by giving them a stronger look."

What to expect: Some fillers contain an anesthetic to decrease discomfort at the injection site. Some men require more than one injection to achieve the desired smoothing or filling effect. After treatment, some redness or swelling may occur. Fillers can last 6 to 18 months.
