Lipitor Diabetes Allegations
Lipitor is a statin medications used in combination with diet and exercise to reduce levels of LDL or "bad" cholesterol. According to court documents, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) announced in February 2012 that the labels for Lipitor and other statins would be updated to include new information about their potential association with Type 2 diabetes. The agency's announcement indicated that the label change was prompted by a review that included, among other things, a study published the previous month in JAMA: Internal Medicine which suggested that post-menopausal women treated with statins faced an increased risk of developing new-onset Type 2 diabetes. *

Court records indicate that more than 1,800 Lipitor lawsuits are now pending in the District of South Carolina, where all federally-filed claims that allege the drug increases the risk for Type 2 diabetes have been consolidated for coordinated pretrial proceedings. Among other things, plaintiffs accuse Pfizer Inc. of concealing the association between Lipitor and diabetes in order to protect sales of the drug. The lawsuits further allege that the label modifications made by Pfizer in 2012 still do not adequately address this risk, and assert that they would have never used the statin had they been aware of its association with diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes patients who allegedly developed the disease due to their use of Lipitor may be entitled to compensation for medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering, and more.
