BOULDER, Colo., Oct. 20, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp. Systems Engineer Homero Gutierrez has been honored by the Latinos in Science and Engineering (MAES*) professional society with its annual 2014 Experto Tecnico Award.

The MAES Experto Tecnico Award recognizes individuals whose ideas become the basis for technological innovation, and who push the envelope of technical and professional achievement, as distinguished by their research and development portfolio and by their patents and publications.

Gutierrez, a Ball employee since 1999, works on control system design, modeling and analysis for pointing systems within the company's Tactical Solutions business unit. He also supports a myriad of other programs, projects and activities throughout the company.

"I am honored to receive this award and applaud Ball Aerospace for its strong commitment to attract and retain exceptional and diverse employees," said Gutierrez. "In my fifteen years at Ball, I've enjoyed working on technically challenging systems designed to help improve our understanding of earth and space science, and to contribute to our national defense," said Gutierrez.

Gutierrez earned his B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. in Aeronautics and Astronautics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He received the award at the 40th Annual MAES Symposium in San Diego on October 17.

Founded in 1974, the mission of MAES is to "promote, cultivate, and honor excellence in education and leadership among Latino engineers and scientists." It is the foremost Latino organization for the development of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) leaders in the academic, executive and technical communities.

*MAES, which stands for "Mexican American Engineers and Scientists," was the name of the organization when founded in 1975. The "MAES" acronym has been retained to honor the heritage of the organization, but the unabbreviated title now embraces the broad spectrum of nationalities of practicing and aspiring Latino engineers and scientists throughout the U.S.
