UK Heatwave to Increase Traffic on Roads

With the temperature constantly rising Britain's roads are expected to be packed every weekend with people taking advantage of the rarity of nice weather.

Temperatures are expected to soar over the next few weeks and Malcolm Bell, board member of the Devon and Cornwall Business council said “There have been health warnings and talk of 30C temperatures keeping people inside, but it has had the opposite effect down here because people have been coming to the beaches and the costal spots for the sea breeze”.

The AA have warned people about traffic disruption as people pile onto the roads, especially now the school summer holidays have started. They said that they are expecting an increase in the number of breakdowns, mostly due to the engines overheating.

Social workers and other council staff were put on high alert last weekend to look out for the elderly and vulnerable people and the Public Health England (PHE) has advised people to stay indoors during the hottest times of the day. But this won't stop people flooding to beaches and other holiday destinations in and around the UK.

At this time of the year sunshine is at its peak and the glare from the sun can prove to be dangerous when you're on the roads. Make sure you always keep your windscreen clean to avoid glare and use your sun visor and sunglasses to block out the sun when possible.

When the temperature does reach highs flash floods can be another risk. Flash flooding during the summer is likely to become a much more frequent occurrence across the UK as a result of the ever changing climate. Flash floods can occur without warning and high water levels may occur because the ground is dry and less capable of absorbing the water.

The environment you are driving in can change in an instant. Make sure you're fully prepared and have supplies handy in case you have to stop anywhere”.
