SAN DIEGO, June 18, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated QCOM, today announced that the Qualcomm® Snapdragon 805 processor and Qualcomm® Gobi 9x35 modem are powering the Samsung Galaxy S5 Broadband LTE-A in Korea, the world's first commercially available LTE Advanced Cat 6 smartphone. The Samsung Galaxy S5 Broadband LTE-A smartphone is the first commercial mobile device to feature the Snapdragon 805 processor and Gobi 9x35 LTE Advanced Category 6 modem, enabling Ultra HD video capture and playback, connectivity for mobile web streaming and downloads and a leading-edge graphics and gaming experience for consumers.

"The Korea launch of the Samsung Galaxy S5 Broadband LTE-A, the world's first commercial LTE Cat 6 smartphone, will usher in a new class of premium mobile computing experiences for consumers," said Murthy Renduchintala, executive vice president, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. and co-president, QCT.  "With this device, consumers will now have the ability to more easily capture and share stunning 4K video while enjoying gaming that brings console-quality experiences to the smartphone."

The Gobi 9x35, the industry's first commercial 20nm cellular modem and Qualcomm Technologies' fourth generation 3G/LTE multimode modem, is the first commercially available modem to support LTE Advanced carrier aggregation for both LTE TDD and FDD Category 6.  The modem is backwards compatible with major cellular technologies including WCDMA /MC-HSPA, CDMA 1x/EVDO Rev. The solution also features the WTR3925 transceiver, the mobile industry's first commercial 28nm RF chip, which supports the major 3GPP-approved radio frequency bands and carrier aggregation combinations on a single chip. The LTE Cat 6 device is designed to provide consumers with download speeds of up to 300 Mbps and more efficient power consumption.

The Samsung Galaxy S5 Broadband LTE-A featuring the Snapdragon 805 processor will be the first commercial smartphone to deliver several leading edge experiences, including:

  • The ultimate Ultra HD connection: The Snapdragon 805 processor supports a rich Ultra HD experience enabling users of the device to capture and share Ultra HD video and stream to external devices, including HDTVs.
  • Console-quality gaming: Qualcomm® Adreno 420 GPU includes hardware tessellation and geometry shaders to support stunning, console-quality graphics at lower power consumption and memory bandwidth, for a beautiful gaming experience.
  • Advanced photo processing: The Snapdragon 805 processor supports the up to 1.2Gpixel/s image signal processor (ISP), allowing devices to take incredibly high resolution photos and enjoy cutting-edge post-processing, even in low light conditions.

The Samsung Galaxy S5 Broadband LTE-A smartphone will be commercially available beginning mid-June in Korea.
