NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

In its first initiative with the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ), News Corp will open The Wall Street Journal newsroom and resources to five Mexican journalists for an immersive, month-long summer fellowship.

The News Corp Fellows will have the opportunity to focus on access to information, freedom of expression and digital technology at a leading global business news outlet.

Journalists from a wide range of Mexican news organizations will experience firsthand the workings of a fast-paced digital news operation. By shadowing Journal reporters and editors from different departments each week, they will gain new skills and strategies. ICFJ will administer the program.

“Today's journalists must thrive in an environment characterized not only by rapid digital transformation, but also one that requires coverage of events across increasingly unsettled and dangerous terrain. We are honored to work with ICFJ on this program, through which journalists can learn new skills that help them navigate the challenges of our time,” said News Corp Chief Executive Robert Thomson.

English-speaking journalists from news organizations in Mexico are eligible, including videographers, newsroom editors, bloggers and graphic reporters. The five selected for the program will attend an orientation at ICFJ headquarters in Washington, D.C., before heading to The Wall Street Journal in New York.

At the orientation, the News Corp Fellows will explore issues concerning freedom of the press and learn how U.S. journalists interact with government institutions. The Fellows will also visit think tanks in the nation's capital as well as government agencies.

“The timing of this program is perfect,” said ICFJ President Joyce Barnathan. “News Corp is providing an extraordinary opportunity for Mexican journalists to gain the tools needed to increase transparency and government accountability.”

The ICFJ is a Philanthropy Partner of News Corp for 2014.
