SPARTANBURG, S.C., Feb. 5, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Denny's Corporation DENN, franchisor and operator of one of America's largest franchised full-service restaurant chains, today announced the recipients of its 2013 Hungry For Education scholarship program. In partnership with leading non-profit minority advocacy organizations LULAC National Educational Services Centers, Inc., Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities, The Tom Joyner Foundation, U.S. Pan Asian Chamber of Commerce Education Foundation, Urban League of the Upstate, and Rainbow PUSH Coalition, the company proudly presented more than $50,000 in combined scholarships to 33 deserving students. The full list of award recipients is available online at www.dennyshungryforeducation.com.

"We are pleased to honor this year's group of worthy students who share in our commitment to help end childhood hunger," commented Frances Allen, Chief Brand Officer for Denny's. "Our new scholarship program has helped bring the important issue of hunger awareness and relief to the forefront of the industry, and we hope that the continuation of Hungry For Education scholarships will further inspire and empower more students to be proactive in making positive change in their local communities."

Denny's Hungry For Education scholarship challenged qualified high school and college students to share Denny's goal of ending hunger in local communities and each scholarship winner exemplified the desire to work toward that goal through their actionable ideas. Denny's scholarship committee reviewed each applicant essay and selected one award recipient's idea to incorporate into its corporate social responsibility plan to help local childhood hunger relief efforts. Ilse Delgado, scholarship recipient from U.S. Pan Asian Chamber of Commerce Education Foundation, has been selected among the student scholarship winners this year for her idea that Denny's should create a special menu or menu item in which proceeds from the item(s) would be donated to a local family in need each week. Denny's will work with Ms. Delgado to further develop and implement this idea into a local program in her hometown of El Paso, TX.

Frances Allen continued, "We look forward to bringing Ilse's idea to life in her local community and working toward a future where childhood hunger is a thing of the past."
