Italian olive oil producer Bellucci Premium responds to an article published by the Olive Oil Times that discusses how a Mediterranean diet can protect against diabetes.

In an article published by Olive Oil Times on January 8th titled “Mediterranean Diet with Extra Virgin Olive Oil May Protect from Diabetes?” a study finds that by following a Mediterranean diet, one can cut their risk of diabetes by 30% compared to a low-fat control diet. The study was published by the annals of Internal Medicine and involved 3,541 men and women from Spain. The participants were between the ages of 55 and 80 and were at high risk for heart disease, but did not have diabetes. Those in the test group were assigned one of three diets: a Mediterranean diet supplemented with extra virgin olive oil, a Mediterranean diet supplemented with nuts, or a low-fat control diet.

After a little over four years, 101 members of the control group developed diabetes, whereas only 80 participants who followed the Mediterranean diet developed diabetes. According to the article researchers attributed this gap to the inclusion of extra virgin olive oil and concluded, “A Mediterranean diet enriched with extra virgin olive oil without caloric limitations may reduce diabetes risk in individuals with a high heart disease risk.”

Natalie Sexenian, the marketing manager for Italian olive oil producer Bellucci Premium, says, “Refined sugars and flour are major diabetes culprits; they cause blood sugar to spike and become very unstable. Replacing them with healthy fats like olive oil can help to stabilize and control blood sugar. The Mediterranean diet limits sugar and flour intake while increasing fat intake from fish, nuts, and olive oil, resulting in an effective approach to combating diabetes.”

Bellucci offers three different types of oil, including an organic option, with a mild peppery flavor and fruity undertones that will satisfy any palate. Bellucci Premium Toscano extra virgin olive oil uses olives that are grown on the beautiful landscapes of Tuscany, and maintained by 3rd and 4th generation farmers. The third type of oil Bellucci produces is the finest 100% Italian extra virgin olive oil, grown in many different regions of Italy.
