A new trend has recently developed among prospective travelers who are looking to save money but do not want to sacrifice the quality of their vacation: waiting until the proverbial last minute to book their travel plans. While this has caused some consternation among those who are inclined to make reservations well in advance and then plan accordingly, this style of travel is catching on for several reasons, though the main reason is generally cost.

At Get Away Today, Chuck Smith has experienced this first-hand. “We see it a lot, and frankly, it is smart on behalf of the customer. Our last-minute travel deals are often the most cost-efficient, and they don't sacrifice anything in terms of quality. If a customer is ready to travel at any given moment, they are much more likely to save money on travel expenses.”

The obvious issue this style of travel brings up is planning. How do individuals or families take care of all of the logistics that go into planning a vacation if they do not yet know when they are going? “It requires a lot of flexibility,” began Julie Smith of Get Away Today. “You have to be flexible and willing to gamble a bit. We offer so many so-called ‘last-minute' deals that there is almost always something great available for travelers, it is just that they may not know what it is well in advance.”

According to the Smiths, there are ways to plan ahead for a last minute vacation. “You can block off the time that you want to travel, take the time off of work, and make any arrangements you may need during that time. Then, you can just wait for the vacation deal to come up, and you just have to be willing to go wherever the deal takes you,” said Julie Smith.

The Smiths have reported that many of their clients prefer this method of travel, as the thrill of the surprise adds to the excitement of the vacation. The fact that they save money in doing so seems to just be a bonus. “Our clients love it. So long as they are aware that they need to be flexible they have a great time,” said Chuck Smith. “It's a great way to save money and you end up vacationing in a place you may never have thought of otherwise.
