ARLINGTON, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

Pepco Energy Services, Inc., a subsidiary of Pepco Holdings, Inc. POM and a leader in energy savings performance contracting, has signed a $16.3 million comprehensive energy savings performance contract with Appalachian State University.

Pepco Energy Services will install $16.3 million of energy savings measures in 28 buildings that encompasses over 1.6 million square feet. All of the equipment and system improvements will be paid from energy savings over the 13-year contract term. Energy savings measures include building automation controls, building lighting including new LED lighting equipment, high efficiency chillers and air handlers, geothermal heating and solar thermal water systems, hot water conservation equipment, high efficiency data center infrastructure, Dark Sky compliant campus lighting and steam system improvements. “Appalachian State University is very excited to have Pepco Energy Services back on campus for what we like to call Phase II of our ESPC efforts,” said Michael J. O'Connor, director of the physical plant at ASU. “The University has been a leader in sustainability and reducing our energy use. Our first project with Pepco was instrumental in the campus reducing overall energy use by 30 percent. The next phase will be even more impressive as we aim to halve our energy use in our largest lab building that uses 20 percent of total campus energy. None of this would be possible without the support of our Pepco teammates.”

In addition, Pepco Energy will be providing ongoing measurement and verification and maintenance services over the contract term designed to enhance and assure project savings. The project will reduce Appalachian State University's annual energy usage in the project buildings by 30 percent and its water usage by 24 percent. This project will have positive impacts on the environment, reducing CO2 emissions by 12.7 million pounds per year which is the equivalent of removing the emissions from over 1100 cars from the road.

Pepco Energy Services began working with Appalachian State in 2008 and was selected for a $5.4 million energy savings project involving 13 campus buildings. With the successful conclusion of that project, Pepco Energy Services was awarded this second Phase II project to help the university secure additional energy savings opportunities. “Pepco Energy Services is pleased to have been selected to assist Appalachian State University in improving its energy efficiency, reducing the University's footprint on the environment, and promoting sustainability,” said Mark Kumm, chief operating officer for Pepco Energy Services.

Appalachian State University is ranked third among top public regional universities in the South and 10th place among the top regional universities in the South, according to U.S. News and World Report's 2013 America's Best Colleges Guide. Enrollment is nearly 18,000 students, including both undergraduate and graduate students. The campus is in the mountains of western North Carolina in Boone, situated on the 400 acre main campus with the surrounding 1300 acres belonging to the university.
