Actively Bidding Construction Projects in the Texas Major-Metro Markets Increased 50.4% Compared to One Year Ago

For major-metro regions in Texas, including Dallas, TX; Houston, TX; San Antonio, TX; Austin, TX; and El Paso, TX, the BidClerk Construction Index™ (BCI) reports that there was a year-over-year increase in construction activity for both private and public construction projects that were actively bidding. The 2nd quarter 2013 BCI analysis reports that overall construction activity increased 50.4%. Private construction decreased (-1.2%), but public construction activity nearly doubled, increasing 94.8%. The total value of all the Texas Major-Metro projects reported on BidClerk that bid in the 2nd quarter of 2013 was $5,941,909,509.

In a quarter-over-quarter analysis, the 2nd quarter 2013 BCI analysis showed that private construction increased 9.9% and public construction increased 15.3% compared to the 1st quarter of 2013. This compares to BCI data that showed an increase of both private and public construction between the 4th quarter of 2012 and the 1st quarter of 2013, when private construction increased 10.0% and public construction increased 44.2%.

Among the high profile projects that bid on BidClerk in the 2nd quarter of 2013 were the additions and renovations to Cross Timbers Intermediate, T.A. Howard Middle, Summit High and Mansfield High Schools. (2299975 – BidClerk ID.) The projects began in July, 2013. The project was designed by Huckabee & Associates (Fort Worth) and the contract for general contracting was awarded to Lee Lewis Construction (Dallas). The project is valued at $23,761,000.

In a year-over-year analysis for the Dallas region, combined public and private construction projects that were actively bidding increased 46.6% compared to one year ago. In BCI's quarter-over-quarter analysis, the Dallas region experienced an increase of 31.0%.

In a year-over-year analysis for the Houston region, combined public and private construction projects that were actively bidding increased 59.7%, adding to a 6.3% increase that BCI reported for the 1st quarter of 2013. Compared to 1st quarter data, BCI's quarter-over-quarter analysis for the 2nd quarter 2013 showed that combined, actively bidding Houston region private and public construction projects increased 4.3%.

In a year-over-year analysis for the Austin region, combined public and private construction projects that were actively bidding increased 37.6%. BCI's 2nd quarter 2013 data also showed that combined private and public construction projects in the Austin region increased 18.0% in quarter-over-quarter analysis.

In a year-over-year analysis for the San Antonio region, combined public and private construction projects that were actively bidding increased 35.7%. BCI's 2nd quarter 2013 quarter-over-quarter analysis showed that the San Antonio region's private and public construction projects decreased (-4.2%) compared to the 1st quarter 2013.
