An observational study published in the October 2012 issue of CNS Drugs* followed five persons with TBI who were given a single perispinal injection of Enbrel. Prior to treatment these five individuals took an average of 35.0 seconds to walk 20 meters. Three weeks after this single injection they were able to walk the 20 meters at an average time of 23.7 seconds. All five persons showed improvement. The median pre-treatment time was 26.5 seconds, and the median time three weeks post-treatment was 15.7 seconds. Individuals with the greatest impairment improved the most.

Three weeks after a single injection 100% had improvements in spasticity, 87.5 had cognitive improvements, 80% had psychological improvements and 100% had sensory improvements.

Edward Tobinick, M.D., the study's lead author, stated “Statistically significant clinical improvements in multiple domains were documented following perispinal administration of etanercept in this patient cohort, even in patients treated years after stroke and TBI. Surprising improvements in motor function, spasticity, cognition, incontinence, vision, taste, hearing (and) smell were observed in the patient cohort, all suggesting the existence of a novel and effective therapeutic response.”
