The poor performance of downstream markets and increasing imports have negatively affected sheet metal furniture manufacturers over the past five years, but conditions are expected to improve. For these reasons, industry research firm IBISWorld has updated its report on the Sheet Metal Furniture Manufacturing industry in Australia.

Melbourne, Australia (PRWEB) February 13, 2013

The Sheet Metal Furniture Manufacturing industry's revenue is expected to decline by an annualised 2.8% over the five years through 2012-13. According to IBISWorld industry analyst Anthony Kelly, “This is mainly due to falling domestic demand for sheet metal furniture, reflecting a declining trend in the downstream non-residential building market”. The industry has been particularly affected by a slump in the value of commercial and industrial building construction in the aftermath of the global financial crisis. The local market has also been exposed to greater import penetration.

The Sheet Metal Furniture Manufacturing industry has a low concentration of ownership, with the two largest companies – GUD Holdings Limited and Arrowcrest Group Pty Ltd – generating only small shares of revenue. “The degree of concentration has trended downwards over the past five years as major companies have restructured their operations and acquired competitors”, says Kelly.

The industry's prospects are forecast to improve with an upswing in commercial and industrial building activity and buoyant growth in household consumption. However, the pace of industry expansion will lag that of the general economy due to the continued loss of market share to imports.
