On January 30, 2013, kettlebells trainer Lorna Kleidman responds to a recent article published by The Times of India which discusses the importance of resting when trying to get in shape.

The Times of India article outlined research that was conducted by the University of Stirling in Scotland. The study used two groups of cyclists; one group did short bursts of high intensity workouts with increments of rest between, while the second group rode continuously at an easier pace.

The study found that the first group (the one that had rested in-between exercises) saw significantly better results, and actually saw twice as much of an improvement in performance and power than the second group, reports the article. “It is a case of training smarter. We found in these cyclists that if you can make the hard sessions harder and the easy sessions easier, you are likely to see better progress,” said exercise psychologist Stuart Galloway in the article.

Lorna Kleidman, a fitness trainer who primarily uses kettlebells to whip people into shape, responds to the study. “I've always encouraged people to take adequate rests during my kettlebell classes,” she said.

Kleidman adds that while kettlebells are a relatively easy way to get in shape, it is still important to take breaks. “Working out for an extended period of time can actually be quite dangerous for your body,” Kleidman states. “It can increase your chance of injuring yourself or overworking your body. If you use weights like kettlebells properly, you will see awesome results even faster.”

Lorna Kleidman is a Three-Time World Champion and World Record holder in kettlebell sport and the most decorated kettlebell athlete in the country. She developed the innovative methods used in KettleX as a way to bring the benefits of the bells to everyone in an easy to use, comprehensive and fun format. Lorna has been teaching individuals and group classes for the past six years.
