Hanson Directory Service of Newton, Iowa Celebrates 40 Years in Business

On January 19th, the company that now employs 77 people celebrated together at their annual Christmas party and reminisced about the history that Lloyd Hanson started and every Hanson employee has contributed to over the last four decades.

This month, Hanson Directory Service, Inc. celebrates 40 successful years in business.

It was 40 years ago, in the basement of a Newton home, that Lloyd Hanson started his business. With statistics in favor of failure, who knew that what Lloyd Hanson carried in his character and heart would create a legacy for the Hanson family? At 51 years old, with no money, no equipment, no employees and no product, Lloyd Hanson went to the bank with a business card and a plan.

Lloyd started his career in the Yellow Page industry as a salesman who took personal pride in everything he did. He was a mentor, a teacher and a “doer”! Starting his own company required him to learn the production side of the business as he went along. In just a couple of years, Hanson Directory Service, Inc. outgrew the Hanson family basement and made its new headquarters in the Midtown Building from 1975-1999. In 1979, Bill Hanson joined the company as Vice President. Bill speaks in awe of his father's work ethic, his ability to develop good relationships with companies he represented, and the personal blood, sweat and tears his father put into building this business.

Bill remembers his dad having difficulty transitioning from work to relaxation. Now currently the President and CEO, Bill said of his father, “He was always thinking about business, talking about business, or doing business. Dad would be amazed at the growth of Hanson Directory Service today with the new ideas, the internet and mobile marketing. He would be astonished.”

On January 19th, the company that now employs 77 people celebrated together and reminisced about the history that Lloyd Hanson started and every Hanson employee has contributed to over the last four decades. “We could not have achieved this level of success without all of you! Thank you for all that you do!” Bill Hanson exclaimed as he looked across a room of his extended family/employees. It was an emotional night full of stories of the “good old days” and another generation of Hansons moving forward with Lloyd Hanson's vision.

Veronica Hanson, Telephone Sales Manager, had her opportunity to speak with pride about both her grandfather and her father. “My grandfather taught me a strong work ethic and that it's never too late to follow your dreams, no matter how old you are. My father taught me compassion, integrity, not to cut corners just to make a buck and most importantly that success isn't measured in dollars.”

Hanson Directory Service, Inc. is located today in a 25,000 square foot state of the art facility in the Industrial Park area. Growing out of both the Midtown Building and another location on First Avenue, the new facility will allow for more growth in the years to come. Hanson Directory currently publishes 114 telephone directories in 28 states and serves 490,000 homes and businesses in Iowa alone.
