A recent Southeast Farm Press article reports on two opposing views of the agriculture industry in the US. While one school of thought remains optimistic about the industry, the other claims it is becoming less relevant. Colle Farmers Market offers their views on both sides of the argument.

In recent weeks, two polar opposite opinions on the future of agriculture and the rural U.S. emerged from two prominent voices. While USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack said in December that rural America is becoming less relevant, Christopher Dutton, a professor at Vermont Technical College, said that U.S. agriculture is experiencing a renaissance, according to an article from the Southeast Farm Press.

Vilsack's pessimistic view of American agriculture stems from the fact that the U.S. doesn't have a farm bill. “It's the fact that rural America with a shrinking population is becoming less and less relevant to the politics of this country, and we had better recognize that and we better begin to reverse it,” quotes the article.

Meanwhile, Dutton recently wrote an article for the Huffington Post with a completely different opinion on the issue. He claims that an increased demand for agricultural products as well the growth in popularity of farm-to-table and sustainable living methods are among the factors causing an agricultural renaissance in the U.S. According to the article, he added that he has never seen such a high demand for jobs for his students graduating with agriculture-related degrees.

Vilsack is viewing the U.S. agricultural problems from a political standpoint (and his argument does hold water in that respect), however the fact remains that jobs are up, production is up and the farming industry is seeing more innovation with each year.
